“I know you can’t let me vote, but I’ve got to try,” replied Dr. Lawrence A. Nixon to an election official as he attempted to vote in the Democratic primary in El Paso in 1924. On this #MLKDay, we celebrate three El Pasoans who advanced civil rights in the borderlands. Located two miles north of Chamizal National Memorial, a plaque at the McCall Neighborhood Center commemorates Dr. Lawrence A. Nixon. Dr. Nixon’s challenge of the all-white Democratic primary in El Paso helped pave the way to securing voting rights for all US citizens regardless of race. The neighborhood center itself began as the home of Marshall and Olalee McCall. Marshall McCall was the first African American postal worker in El Paso. Olalee McCall served as an English teacher at the once-segregated Douglass School and in 1937 became the first female high-school principal in the El Paso Independent School District. How can we more fully recognize El Paso’s African American community that was once centered in the neighborhoods surrounding where Chamizal National Memorial stands today? – RMS

Hello! Happy Black History Month! Some of you may know me as Sweet Pea, but in the Communications world I just go by Tamera. I'm doing an independent study and it would mean the world to me if you could complete and share the survey attached! https://forms.gle/biVgYw89GagfrWZVA #blackinelpaso #elpasotexas #BlackHistoryMonth
El Paso! I am conducting research with ioby (a positive change acronym for "in our backyard"), a nonprofit organization and crowdfunding platform for community leaders to organize local capital for their projects, in the forms of tax-deductible funds, volunteer muscle, and in-kind donations. For more about ioby, https://www.ioby.org/10yastories Please help me represent El Paso by filling out this short survey about local perceptions of the nonprofit sector, grassroots work and neighborhoods, and the degree to which you trust local and county government and private institutions. Link to survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JQXLYC5. Note: By submitting this survey before November 15, you're also entering for a chance to win one of THIRTY $200 Amazon gift cards!
