One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding sexual assault is who can be an offender/aggressor? ANYONE can commit a sexual assault. 80% of the time, sexual assault victims know their offender. This is intentional. Once offenders/aggressors have gained the other person’s trust, it makes it easier for them to take advantage of a situation and more difficult for survivors to seek help and come forward. #ElPaso #BelieveSurvivors

CW // Sexual assault
There have been numerous people in our community who have come forward to talk about their experiences with sexual assault. Those who have experienced sexual assault know one thing that others will never completely understand — it is never easy to come forward and tell your story. It takes an incredible amount of courage and strength to share your experiences. There is no right or wrong way to come forward, and survivors are never obligated to share their story ever if they don’t want to. Survivors know just like most people in society the victim-blamin culture we find ourselves in, making it difficult for survivors to feel safe in telling their story. Your healing and process is unique. CASFV sees you, we believe you and we are here for you.

Join us this month as we remember the history of pride, celebrate LGBTQ+ folks, and advocate for accessible, free, safe, and confidential services for those who have experienced sexual and family violence. The progress we have today is because of Black trans and queer folks who led the LGBTQ+ rights movement and who have advocated for victims and survivors of sexual, dating, and family violence. #Pride2020

CW: Racism, violence, sexual assault, domestic violence.

CASFV's mission is to end sexual and family violence in all its forms. In doing so, we have advocated for gender equality, just as important, we must advocate for racial equality. Recent events have brought to the forefront the role that historic and systemic racism has played in perpetuating the cycle of abuse and violence.

As a provider of sexual and family violence services, it is important to understand the different forms of oppression and marginalization experienced by Black folks in their overlapping identities in terms of race, sex, gender, and class.

Although sexual and domestic violence crosses all race, class, and gender barriers, these experiences are far from being the same. According to the National Organization for Women, over 18% of African American women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime, and for every 15 Black women who are raped, only one of them will file a police report.

For women, where sex and gender creates a barrier in accessing resources, factors such as race, sexuality, and socioeconomic status create additional barriers in whether Black women are believed, file a police report, seek out a sexual assault forensic exam, reach out for help, or have access to resources altogether.

We stand in solidarity with folks working to end the cycle of abuse and advocate for justice and equality in all its forms.

Social distancing does not equal social isolation. Over the past couple of weeks we have encouraged individuals to reach out to people who they know might be experiencing violence in their homes. 🧡We encourage everyone to connect with loved ones via phone, video calls and hosting Netflix watch parties together! Connecting with others can also be a form of self-care.

Eres fuerte. Eres amada. #FelizDiaDeLasMadres •

Happy mother's day to all the momma's out there! A mother is someone who provides support, love, acceptance, and comfort. It can be a biological parent, older sister, grandmother, or a friend.
Our thoughts go out to all the mothers who advocate for their children, empower their children, have lost their children, have been separated from their children, people who have lost their mothers, or have found that same support in others. 🧡 We hope you have warm, safe day, and celebrate with loved while following social distancing precautions. In today’s livestream we talked about de-escalation tips. Identifying warning signs such as change in posture and facial expressions are critical to recognizing when someone needs to step back and communicate that they may need some time apart. These tips aren’t just useful for people at home with aggressors. Anyone at home who might be feeling normal feelings of frustration and agitation during these times could try picking up on these warning signs. 🧡 #CASFV
