'We have been failed': Simone Biles breaks down in tears recounting Nassar's sexual abuse

CW: Sexual Violence
Today, four of the United States elite gymnasts, Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney, Maggie Nichols and Aly Raisman shared their traumatic experiences in seeking justice after reporting their sexual abuse.
These barriers do not belong only to the FBI or US Gymnastics but are a part of a larger culture that values those in power to the point of sacrificing the safety of women, boys and girls.
We have seen this play out through many institutions like the Catholic Church, Boy Scouts, Penn State and Hollywood. Consistently our culture and institutions continue to fail those it should protect. Only when we value women and children as equal will our culture begin to change.

Biles and fellow gymnasts McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman and Maggie Nichols testified about their abuse in graphic detail at a hearing on the FBI's mishandling of the Nassar case.

β€œMy interning position at CASFV involves ensuring children’s safety and well-being needs are met,” shared Ambar Gutierrez during her presentation at the UTEP CARES Regional Internship Program Poster Symposium. Ambar is pursuing her Masters in Social Work at UTEP while participating in the paid UTEP CARES internship opportunity. She has played a critical and beneficial role in supporting the Children’s Program at the CASFV Emergency Shelter. She shared lessons learned, reflections, and future plans for her career and supporting the well-being of children in the community.

CASFV is grateful for Ambar Gutierrez’s insight and contributions to the Center.

Our thanks extend not only to Ambar, but to UTEP’s Center for Community Engagement, CARES Regional Internship Program, and all faculty who support their students in pursuing internships and community service. Center for Community Engagement at the University of Texas at El Paso
