Go Lights Out El Paso! We are nearing the end of fall migration, which ends November 30th, but don’t let turning off non-essential lights fly over your head. Protect our feathered friends by turning off all non-essential lights at work or at home, both indoor and outdoor, between 11PM and 6AM. Doing so can help dramatically reduce the dangerous threats that birds face while migrating. Learn more at 🔗https://tx.audubon.org/urbanconservation/lights-out-texas

Designating Castner Range as a National Monument could "help close what researchers call a “nature gap”—the uneven distribution of access to nature within and among communities. El Paso, with its diminishing open spaces, is a national nature-gap hot spot."
Unexploded ordnance saved Castner Range from development. Now conservationists want to open it to the public.

11/24/2022
Today and every day, Frontera is thankful for your continued support and dedication to special places and wide open spaces. 💕

Designating El Paso’s Castner Range as a national monument would create more recreational space and preserve history.

Have you ever wondered who else visits Frontera’s open natural spaces? 🌄
In the trail cam footage, you can see a coyote wandering around our Chihuahuan Desert. Did you know that coyotes are a synanthropic species since they benefit from human-associated developments.
Coyotes have a highly organized social system, even in urban areas. For hunting, they usually travel alone or in loose pairs, in contrast to wolves. This leads to the impression that coyotes don’t form packs.
📹 Thank you Robert Haynes, for sharing your equipment with Frontera and for this amazing video!

Since I was a child looking at the “unexploded ammunition” signs there, I’ve never understood why neighboring Castner Range hadn’t been remediated so that it can be enjoyed by all. As your City Representative, I will advocate for Castner Range to formally be declared Castner Range National Monument so that it can get the resources it needs in order to be cleared of any hazards and opened to the public for hiking and recreation.
More generally, El Paso should do everything we can to preserve the precious open space on our beautiful mountain. It’s such an important resource for our recreation, health, and even economic development through ecotourism.
We recently awarded the frontera land alliance a grant to further their work on one of our four priority campaigns for 2022, the Castner Range in Texas.
Frontera Land Alliance is the leading local grassroots group responsible for building strong community support for the protection of Castner Range. This grant is intended to help them scale up their communications capacity and provide funding for travel to Washington, DC to continue putting pressure on the administration to move forward with the monument designation.
Castner Range is a mountainous 7,081 acres located between city neighborhoods and Franklin Mountains State Park in the majority Latinx community of El Paso, Texas. Renowned for its annual display of blooming Mexican Yellow Poppies, Castner Range contains artifacts and petroglyphs dating back 12,000 years. In a state with only 4% public land, free access to open spaces is limited, and the majority low-income population in El Paso is often priced out of paying for access to parks.
For more information about this project and grantee, head over to our site: http://www.conservationalliance.com/grants/castner-range-national-monument/
