Hope everyone is staying safe and warm this morning!

Today is President's Day, which originally celebrated George Washington's birthday, initially only applied to the District of Columbia, but in 1885 it was expanded to the whole country. At the time, Washington’s Birthday joined four other nationally recognized federal bank holidays—Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, the Fourth of July, and Thanksgiving—and was the first to celebrate the life of an individual American. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, signed into law in 1983, was the second.

RAY BAUM's Act is a no-cost or low-cost change that saves lives! Help 9-1-1 find your entity's location in an emergency. 📍🎧

The RAY BAUM's Act impacts any entity providing or using Multi-Line Telephone System (MLTS) service of any size, including, but not limited to:

• Companies with offices in multiple locations
• Campuses including K‐12, universities, & colleges
• Hospitals
• Hotels
• Retail facilities
• Financial institutions

The Federal Communications Commission rules ensure that a “dispatchable location” is conveyed with 9‐1‐1 calls to 9‐1‐1 centers, regardless of the technological platform used, including 9‐1‐1 calls from MLTS. 👮🏿‍♀️👨‍🚒

The rules apply to all MLTS that are manufactured, imported, offered for first sale or lease, first sold or leased, or installed after February 16, 2020. Enterprises with fixed MTLS phones are to comply with the new requirements by January 6, 2021.

For more information, including non‐fixed MLTS devices on-and-off‐premises compliance dates, visit our RAY BAUM'S fact sheet at https://www.elpaso911.org/

"Almost immediately after King’s death, there were calls for a national holiday in his honour. Beginning in 1970 a number of states and cities made his birthday, January 15, a holiday. Although legislation for a federal holiday was introduced in Congress as early as 1968, there was sufficient opposition, on racial and political grounds, to block its passage. In 1983 legislation making the third Monday in January a federal holiday finally was passed, and the first observance nationwide was in 1986."

Veterans Day is a celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

A special thank you to the women and men currently serving at Ft. Bliss, those that chose El Paso to be their forever home after serving the Armed Forces, and 9-1-1 telecommunicators and first responders that served. 🇺🇸 📣

Did you know? Texas was the FIRST state to reclassify its 9-1-1 Telecommunicators and include them as First Responders alongside peace officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel. Before HB 1090, which took effect September 1, 2019, 9-1-1 telecommunicators were classified as secretaries!

Today, we honor all First Responders for serving our community every day. We extend a special congratulations to the FIRST, First Responders (Telecommunicators), for celebrating your second-ever National First Responders Day! Thank you!

"This Patriot Day, we commemorate the lives of those who perished on September 11, 2001, we pray for the families who carry on their legacies, and we honor the unmatched bravery of our Nation’s first responders. We also commend those who, in the days and years following the attack, answered the call to serve our country and continue to risk their lives in defense of the matchless blessings of freedom.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress designated September 11 of each year as “Patriot Day.”
