The City of DeKalb regrets to inform the community of the tragic passing of one of our firefighter/paramedics on Monday, April 6, 2026. Our focus remains on supporting the firefighter’s family, friends, and our department members during this difficult time.

The DeKalb Fire Department sincerely appreciates the support and understanding of the community. Funeral arrangements are pending. Please respect the privacy of the family as they navigate this difficult time.

No one ever wants to hear that someone they love has been diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately, our department is facing that reality with one of our own, Zak Martinez #71, who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

They say it takes a village — and tonight, our brother and his family truly felt that.

We want to sincerely thank Budda’s Brotherhood Foundation for their incredible generosity and donation to support him and his family during this fight.

Budda’s Brotherhood was founded in memory of firefighter/medic Marco “Budda” Ordaz to help firefighters with cancer and their families, providing support just like the fire community once gave Marco.

Acts like this are a true reflection of what brotherhood and community stand for.

We are beyond grateful. 🤍

This weekend 8 brothers from the local attended the 33rd Annual AFFI Honor Guard Convention. Brothers attended classes, taught classes including hands on training as well as a celebration to Honor our fallen brother and our newest brothers from around the state who are joining the Guard.
