Moreau Fire Protection District responded to a report of an unknown-type emergency at 320 Willow Lane in Barnett. The incident was initially believed to possibly be a medical call.
Upon arrival, the first responding unit reported that the incident appeared to be a residential structure fire. Further investigation confirmed the fire, and a full response was requested from Moreau Fire Protection District.
Moreau Fire Protection District responded with one engine, two tanker-pumpers, an additional tanker, and a chief’s vehicle. Mutual-aid resources included a tanker from Rocky Mount Fire Protection District, a ladder and tanker from Versailles Rural Fire Protection District, and an engine company from the City of Eldon Fire Department.
Initial operations focused on exterior fire suppression. As conditions improved and the incident progressed into the early stages of overhaul, firefighters were assigned to interior operations.
During those operations, a section of the ceiling collapsed onto two Moreau firefighters and one Versailles Rural firefighter, temporarily trapping or pinning them beneath the debris. A Mayday was transmitted. One Moreau firefighter was able to self-extricate, and the remaining two firefighters were rescued within a short period of time.
All three firefighters were evaluated at the scene by Mid-Mo Ambulance District personnel, who had been standing by during the incident. No injuries were reported.
The firefighters involved were wearing full structural firefighting protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus. The ceiling had been evaluated before the collapse and had not shown an apparent indication of imminent failure. Structural firefighting and overhaul operations remain inherently dangerous, and fire-damaged building components can fail suddenly, particularly after being weakened by fire and saturated with water during suppression efforts.
Fire suppression activities continued throughout the incident while personnel worked to remove the trapped firefighters and maintain control of the fire.
The residence was vacant, and no utilities were believed to be in service at the property. The cause and circumstances of the fire remain under investigation by the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Chief Jantz extends his thanks to all personnel involved and to the mutual-aid and supporting agencies for their response, including Rocky Mount Fire Protection District, Versailles Rural Fire Protection District, City of Eldon Fire Department, Mid-Mo Ambulance District, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office, and Morgan County 911 Dispatch. Moreau Fire Protection District is especially thankful that the firefighters were removed quickly and that no injuries were reported.
