Yesterday, Eldora Fire Rescue conducted a scheduled prescribed burn of a structure located at 2520 Highway 175.

Upon arrival, crews deployed Ladder 262 and Pumper/Tanker 264, establishing hose lines in preparation for the burn. Water walls were utilized to protect Ladder 262 and a nearby garage that was designated for preservation. Crosslay hose lines were positioned on the north, west, and south sides of the structure to ensure full operational coverage.

Prior to ignition, firefighters divided into teams of two and conducted training exercises. These drills focused on advancing charged crosslay lines into the structure while maintaining low visibility posture and applying water directly to simulated heat sources.

Following the training exercise, crews prepared the structure for ignition by creating ventilation openings in the roof, second floor ceiling, and first floor ceiling to promote effective airflow. Debris inside the home was then consolidated in the southeast corner of the main living area and ignited using a drip torch.

Crews monitored conditions from the exterior, observing fire behavior and smoke patterns while continuing to protect surrounding exposures, including the garage and apparatus, as needed. The structure’s roof collapsed shortly after 9:00 a.m., and the remaining structure was reduced by approximately 12:30 p.m.

All units cleared the scene by 1:30 p.m., with all personnel and equipment accounted for and returning safely. Assistance during the operation was provided by Eldora EMS and the Eldora Police Department.

Just before 10:30 a.m. this morning, Eldora Fire Rescue was dispatched to provide mutual aid at Pine Lake Corn Processors, assisting Steamboat Rock Fire and Rescue.

Eldora Fire responded with Engine 261 and Ladder 262, staffed by six firefighters.

While en route, information provided by Eldora EMS, Steamboat Rock Fire and Rescue, and Hardin County Emergency Management indicated that no visible flames were present; however, smoke or steam was observed emitting from the ring dryer.

Upon arrival, Engine 261 established a water supply from a nearby hydrant and deployed two crosslay hose lines. One line, equipped with a fog nozzle, was used to cool the exterior of the dryer, while a second line, utilizing a piercing nozzle, was applied to cool the interior. These operations commenced after confirming that all energy sources to the dryer had been secured.

Eldora Fire cleared the scene at approximately 12:00 p.m. Assistance was provided by Steamboat Rock Fire and Rescue, Hardin County Emergency Management, Ackley Fire Department, and Pine Lake Corn Processors personnel.

All personnel and equipment were accounted for, and crews returned home safely.

Last night, during Eldora Fire Rescue’s monthly training, firefighters reviewed and practiced SCBA operations.

Participants donned and doffed SCBA equipment, including harnesses, masks, and full bunker gear. They then completed scenario-based training focused on search and rescue, Rapid Intervention Team (RIT)/firefighter down situations, and navigating confined spaces.

Throughout the training, firefighters maintained strong communication and composure while relaying critical information to Incident Command.

This type of training is essential to success on the fireground. Operating in full gear and low-visibility conditions is both physically demanding and mentally challenging, often requiring firefighters to rely on touch and teamwork to move safely through a structure.

For some members, this was their first time using an SCBA, and they performed exceptionally well. Great work by all involved.

Happy National Telecommunications Week to the dispatchers and communications staff who deserve an award for understanding radio traffic that sounds like heavy breathing, sirens, and half-finished thoughts.

Somehow, you still know who we are, where we’re going, and what we meant to say.

We appreciate all you do for Eldora Fire Rescue and the community every single day.

Eldora Fire Rescue would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Hardin County Community Endowment Foundation for awarding our department a $5,000 grant.

These funds will help us purchase a battery-powered positive pressure fan, an important piece of equipment that will strengthen our fireground operations and improve safety for both our responders and the community we serve.

We are grateful for the continued support of organizations like the Hardin County Community Endowment Foundation that invest back into local emergency services. Your generosity helps us better protect the residents of Eldora and the surrounding area.

Thank you for supporting Eldora Fire Rescue and the mission of serving our community.
