Did you know there are nearly 200 fire departments that protect the 18 counties that make up southwest Oklahoma? A good many of them are staffed by volunteers.

I didn't know there are 20 VFDs in Comanche County alone!

With the prolonged heat and drought, this has been a taxing wildfire season on our local departments. Fighting large fires, either in their backyard or by providing mutual aid to neighboring towns and counties for multiple days, has zapped their stockpile of supplies.

We rely upon these firefighters to protect life and property at a moment's notice with some paying the ultimate price in doing so. The least we can do is ensure these brave men and women have enough supplies to stay fueled and hydrated during the battle and properly refreshed and recovered afterward.

Have you considered making a donation to your local volunteer fire department? Fundraisers pop up frequently to help support the stations' operations and equipment.

Other supplies of use:

-Bottled water
-Gatorade/Liquid IV drinks or packets
-Non-perishable snacks
-Baby wipes for a quick clean
-Eye drops after fighting through smoke
-Chapstick to combat the hot, dry conditions

Until we get any appreciable rainfall, our firefighters will continue to battle these fires. Let's chip in and give them a hand!

3 THINGS THAT HELP ANYONE OPEN UP TO YOU

3 things decide whether someone keeps talking: Genuine curiosity, active listening, and zero judgment.

Start with curiosity that's actually genuine. We can be fake curious and add small talk with nothing underneath.

Jesus was masterful here. He noticed people, and He asked amazing questions. His question-to-answer ratio in Scripture is about four to one.

Active listening comes next. Ask, then have a follow-up ready. Don't move on too quickly.

When you listen and engage with people, it has to be more than asking a question and moving on, but listening and finding out what makes this person unique.

Zero judgment might matter most. When people share their story, they're taking a risk.

There's no place for correction in that moment. So we've got a choice: come down on them, or stay in the seat of curiosity.

DAY 4 — DON’T START THE NEXT FIRE

- EXTREME DROUGHT MEANS EXTREME CAUTION

While cleaning up your property, do not create another ignition.

Under our current conditions, a single spark can ignite dry grass or vegetation.

Use extreme caution with:

• Mowers and other power equipment
• Vehicles parked or driven through dry grass
• Trailer chains dragging on pavement
• Welding and grinding
• Outdoor burning
• Any activity capable of producing heat or sparks

Dry brush and vegetation can support dangerous fire behavior—especially when combined with wind and terrain.

Preventing a wildfire is far easier than stopping one.

- One spark is all it takes. Be the reason a fire DOESN’T start.
