Weather permitting, a resurfacing of State Street Bridge will begin Monday, June 1 with an estimated completion date of July 31. During the project, traffic across State Street Bridge will be reduced to one lane, controlled by a temporary traffic signal at each end of the bridge.
To maximize the bridge's full functionality and safety for as many years as possible, the contractor will use a latex-modified concrete for the bridge decking. It has a projected lifespan of 25+ years and is considered nearly impermeable to road salt and other corrosive materials.
One side of the pedestrian crossing will remain available during the duration of the project. The walkway below each side of the bridge will remain open for all but a few days during the project (we'll share updates), and will always be accessible once construction finishes each day.
MAY 28 UPDATE: The underpass sidewalk (both sides) will be closed during construction hours Tuesday, June 2 to avoid spray and potential falling debris while crews power clean the bridge.
The Village recognizes this project will cause an inconvenience and delays especially during peak driving periods. When possible, please consider crossing the Fox River at other points, such as Stearns Road, Red Gate, Route 20 or even further north or south depending upon where your travels take you to/from.
This project was originally planned for summer 2024 and again for summer 2025, but the IL31 Culvert Replacement plus the rebuilds of both McLean Boulevard and the Route 20/IL 31 interchange would've added more detours and challenges than necessary. This summer, please have patience and consider using alternative routes.
GETTING TO CONCERTS AND EVENTS: If physically capable, travelers from the east to South Elgin's Village Center for events such as concerts, cruise nights and other events may consider whether it's best to park and walk across the bridge to Panton Mill Park. Please remember the underpass below each bridge will be open after construction finishes for the day; thus the easiest way to cross State Street during the bridge resurfacing project may be to walk below it.
Updates will be shared at southelgin.com/projects, via weekly e-newsletter (sign up at southelgin.com/enews) and through social media.
For inquiries about the bridge project, please call the Village's On-Site Representative: Matt Gurke, Resident Engineer (815) 302-4001. Mr. Gurke will be on-site each day to monitor the job and respond to questions.
Thank you, South Elgin!
