When the sirens sound, that's your cue to get inside and obtain more information. 📢

Elgin's outdoor emergency warning system is designed to alert people who are outside to seek shelter immediately and look to trusted weather sources for additional information. You may not hear them indoors.

Sirens are activated for:
- Tornados
- Hazardous storms with damaging winds and hail
- Other emergencies when shelter should be sought

Already inside when they go off? You're in the right spot! ➡️ Be sure to have multiple ways to receive weather updates, like a wireless radio, TV and trusted weather apps.

For 47 years, Ed Schmidt has served the Elgin community with dedication, humility and a steady commitment to doing the job well. 🤝

Ed joined the City of Elgin in February 1979 as a police officer with the Elgin Police Department. After more than 30 years in law enforcement, he retired as a Sergeant in 2010.

His retirement lasted one weekend.

Just three days later, Ed began his second career with the city as a lead worker in the streets division of public works. Today, Ed and his crew help complete street and sidewalk repairs following water, sewer and storm infrastructure work, supporting safe and well-maintained roadways throughout Elgin.

When asked what matters most on the job, Ed keeps it simple: "I try to come in every day with a good attitude. That's probably the most important thing you can bring to the table."

As he approaches nearly 50 years of service to the City of Elgin, Ed's career reflects the kind of long-term commitment, work ethic and community pride that help make local government service to our community so meaningful.

Thank you, Ed, for your decades of service to Elgin!

What was inside a 50-year-old Elgin High School time capsule? A school newspaper, photos from campus, department store catalogs, a document covering the 1970s dress code and... a pet rock! 🪨

Mayor David Kaptain joined School District U-46 and Elgin High School leaders and alumni for the special moment celebrating Elgin’s history, school pride and the generations who continue to shape our community.

Thank you to Elgin High School and School District U-46 for preserving and sharing this piece of local history.
