🌪️🚨 Statewide Tornado Drill on March 18

Tomorrow at 9:50 AM, Allen County will take part in Ohio’s statewide tornado drill. This is a great opportunity to practice your severe weather safety plan at home, work, or school.

When the sirens sound, take a moment to act it out—not just think it through. Head to your safe place and remember D.U.C.K.:

⬇️ D – Go Down
Move to the lowest level of your building (basement if available).

🪑 U – Get Under
Take cover under a sturdy table or workbench if possible.

🛡️ C – Cover Your Head
Protect your head and neck with your arms. In a real emergency, helmets or heavy blankets add extra protection.

⏳ K – Keep Sheltered
Stay in your safe place until the drill ends—or until the threat has passed in a real event.

Preparedness starts with practice. Take this opportunity to review your plan.

Stay prepared and stay safe, Allen County!

Yesterday’s high winds kept emergency services busy across Allen County, and we would like to recognize the outstanding work done by the dispatchers at the Allen County Sheriff’s Office.

Throughout the day, dispatchers handled a large volume of calls reporting downed power lines, trees blocking roadways, alarms, and other weather-related emergencies. Despite the constant influx of calls, they remained calm, professional, and efficient—ensuring that the right resources were sent where they were needed as quickly as possible.

Dispatchers are often the unseen first responders. They are the calm voice on the other end of the phone, gathering critical information and coordinating multiple agencies at once to keep our community safe.

American Township Fire Department would like to thank the dedicated dispatchers at the Allen County Sheriff’s Office for their hard work and commitment to serving our residents, especially during challenging conditions like yesterday’s wind event. Your efforts do not go unnoticed, and we appreciate everything you do for our community.

At 3:56am today's date, American Township FD was dispatched to the 1700 block of Homeward Ave. for smoke in the attic. Upon arrival, smoke was observed from the exterior from the eaves and it was determined the blown-in type insulation in the attic was on fire. Due to contents in the structure, an insulation vacuum had to be used to remove several inches of insulation, which required several hours of work as it is a slow process. Mutual aid was requested from Lima FD. There was no fire damage to the living areas. There were no injuries. The cause and damage estimate is currently undetermined and still under investigation. Crews cleared the scene at 8:15am. The American Red Cross and Swartz Restoration are assisting the homeowner.

⏰ Time Change = Battery Change! 🔋🚨

This weekend when you set your clocks for the time change, take a few minutes to check the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms. A working smoke detector can cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half and provides early warning when every second counts. Carbon monoxide alarms help protect your family from the “silent killer” that you cannot see or smell.

American Township Fire Department encourages residents to:
✔️ Replace the batteries in all smoke alarms and CO alarms in your home.
✔️ Test each alarm to make sure it’s working properly.
✔️ Make sure you have smoke detectors on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas.
✔️ Install carbon monoxide alarms near sleeping areas and on every level of your home.
✔️ Replace smoke and CO alarms that are more than 10 years old.

Taking a few minutes during the time change could save your life or the life of someone you love.

Stay safe, and remember: Change your clocks, change your batteries! 🚒🔋
