Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the military. Survivors may be eligible for a range of VA benefits, including Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, education benefits, a VA home loan, and survivors pension benefits.
Scammers may target surviving family members shortly after a Veteran’s death, when benefit payments are issued, and grief makes individuals more vulnerable. Be cautious of unsolicited offers to “help” with financial matters from individuals claiming affiliation with the Department of War or a branch of military service.
Imposters apply pressure to act quickly, promise guaranteed returns, or ask you to transfer funds to private accounts. They build trust and, under the guise of secure growth, steer families to invest in “military-approved” opportunities. In reality, bad actors may take commissions, misuse funds, or expose victims to high-risk investments that result in financial loss.
Veterans: You can help your family avoid survivor fraud by applying in advance for burial in a VA national cemetery, https://www.va.gov/burials-memorials/pre-need-eligibility/. This process, known as a pre-need determination of eligibility for burial, can make burial planning easier for your loved ones during a difficult time
