Administrative Assistant, Short Range Recovery, Lauren Chandler

FROM Lauren:

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ALC AND WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITHIN ALC?
I started out part-time scanning MPC’s and worked my way into the admin role. Both of my parents are retired from the Coast Guard so I have a strong foundation with the Coast Guard.

WHAT ARE YOUR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES?
As an admin I assist with various task to support the division. I help schedule events, keep CDR and Deputy on track for meetings, I ensure efficient operations with the office, maintaining records, assist with travel arrangements and claims.

CAN YOU HIGHLIGHT SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PROJECTS YOU'VE WORKED ON DURING YOUR TIME HERE?
I really enjoyed helping with the 75th anniversary and the remodel of the SRR office.

WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE MOST ABOUT WORKING FOR ALC?
I appreciate the behind the scenes from start to finish of these Aircraft. It takes every single person that touches these aircraft for them to be brought in as a beat up aircraft to a brand new one delivered to the fleet. I appreciate the workforce and keeping people safe while these aircraft are out on a mission.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE LOOKING TO PURSUE A SIMLAR CAREER PATH?
Always be willing to help. In this career you wear a lot of different hats from day to day.

COULD YOU SHARE A FUN OR SURPRISING FACT ABOUT YOURSELF OR WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO MOST OUTSIDE OF WORK?
This is no surprising fact but I love being a boy mom to my little guy. I love to go and stay busy with him. We do a lot of fishing and nerf gun wars.

Say hello to the Logistics Compliance Branch (LCB)!

The Logistics Compliance Branch is the backbone of Coast Guard aviation logistics! As the designated Inventory Control Point, LCB manages the physical handling and storage of aviation materials.

From providing logistics support to Air Stations, ALC Product Lines, and back shops to conducting Logistics Compliance Inspections, LCB ensures everything is where it needs to be, when it needs to be there. They also oversee the traffic office, coordinating shipments of aviation materials to air stations and vendors. And let’s not forget the HAZMART program! LCB handles the procurement, storage, and issuance of authorized chemicals, supporting all commands within the Coast Guard Elizabeth City Complex.

Thanks to LCB, Coast Guard aviation stays mission-ready and running smoothly!

***ALC Spotlight***
Management/Program Analyst, AJ Bohn

FROM AJ:
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ALC AND WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITHIN ALC?
I’m from the area originally, so this place has always felt like home to me. After high school, I joined the Marines to gain aviation experience—it was something I’d always been passionate about. Long story short, I wanted to follow in my father’s footsteps. He was a big influence on me growing up, and seeing the work he did inspired me to pursue a similar path. It’s been an incredible journey so far, and I’m proud to carry on his legacy.

WHAT ARE YOUR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES?
My primary role is to support the Engineering Officer (EO). Essentially, I’m the bridge between Engineering Officers, especially during transfer season, to make sure the transition is as smooth as possible. A big part of my job involves reviewing contracts to ensure all technical requirements are met. On behalf of the EO, I lead vendor visits and audits, which are critical for maintaining quality and compliance.

I am also responsible for building the budget, executing them, and ensuring we stay on track financially. Another key responsibility is working with contracting to execute purchase orders for engineering needs. It’s a dynamic role that requires attention to detail, collaboration, and a deep understanding of the technical and administrative sides of the operation.

CAN YOU HIGHLIGHT SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PROJECTS YOU'VE WORKED ON DURING YOUR TIME HERE?
It’s hard to pick just one project because each one has been meaningful in its own way. If I had to choose, I’d say being involved in every model upgrade—from the A model to the E model of the HH-65, and now the MH-65—has been a career highlight. Watching the evolution of these aircraft and being part of that process has been incredibly rewarding.

I’ve truly enjoyed every stage of my career, from working in the composite shop to transitioning into a planner role and now contributing to engineering. Each step has taught me something new and helped me grow both personally and professionally.

WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE MOST ABOUT WORKING FOR ALC?
Without a doubt, it’s the people. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside some truly great individuals who’ve taught me so much over the years. Their knowledge, experience, and willingness to share have been invaluable to my growth. At the same time, I’ve also had the opportunity to pass on what I’ve learned and teach others, which has been incredibly rewarding. It’s that sense of collaboration and mutual respect that makes working for ALC so special.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE LOOKING TO PURSUE A SIMLAR CAREER PATH?
My biggest piece of advice is to listen and learn from the people who came before you. They’ve already walked the path, faced the challenges, and made the mistakes—and they can help you avoid those same pitfalls. Their experience is invaluable, so take advantage of it.

Also, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and volunteer for new opportunities. Whether it’s a project, a task, or a leadership role, those experiences will help you grow and develop in ways you might not expect. It’s all about staying open to learning and embracing challenges."

COULD YOU SHARE A FUN OR SURPRISING FACT ABOUT YOURSELF OR WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO MOST OUTSIDE OF WORK?
When I was in kindergarten, we had to give a presentation to the class about what we wanted to do when we grew up. My presentation was all about how I wanted to work at the Coast Guard base. It’s amazing to think that I’m now living that dream!

Outside of work, I love traveling with my wife and spending time with my children and grandson. Family time is so important to me. I also love spending time on the water—boating and saltwater fishing are my favorite ways to unwind. There’s something about being out on the water that’s very relaxing.

From challenge to craftsmanship:

Due to a long lead time for a needed OEM part, the LRS Sheet Metal shop took on the task of converting a C-130H wing tip cap into a C-130J wing tip cap. The process involves detailed metal work, heat treating, and lighting installation, all requiring precision and problem-solving at every step.

This conversion showcases the skill and ingenuity of ALC artisans and supports the return to service of CGNR 2006, which has been grounded due to the damaged wing tip cap.

These photos capture the transformation as it unfolds and the expertise behind keeping aircraft mission-ready.

Aviation Logistics Division's Procurement and Property Branch:

The Procurement and Property Branch is a vital hub for ALC, ensuring the meticulous management of assets and the seamless acquisition of critical supplies.

The branch is organized into two key functions: Property and Procurement.

The Property Branch oversees the lifecycle of all tracked Coast Guard aviation assets. It is comprised of two specialized departments:

• Inventories: This team coordinates with more than 40 property custodians to conduct annual inventories, handle asset updates, and identify excess property.
• Disposals: This department manages all excess property by coordinating pickups, staging assets, reporting to the GSA, and scheduling final disposal through partners like UNICOR and DLA.

The Procurement Branch drives mission-readiness by managing ALC’s purchasing power. This team oversees the command's credit card program for four product lines and six support divisions. Their significant annual accomplishments include:

• Processing thousands of purchase requests.
• Executing hundreds of MILSTRIP orders.

Together, the Procurement and Property Branch provides the backbone of logistics and accountability, ensuring Coast Guard aviation assets are always ready for the mission.
