π¨ E-Bikes & E-Motorbikes β Know the Law Before You Ride π¨
The Town of Elizabeth has recently seen an increase in electric bicycles (E-Bikes) and electric motorbikes (E-motos) operating throughout the community. The Elizabeth Police Department wants to ensure the community understands the safety responsibilities and the Colorado laws associated with these vehicles.
E-Motos can reach significant speeds and, when operated improperly or illegally, may create serious safety risks for riders, pedestrians, and motorists.
E-dirt bikes and e-motorcycles typically operate above 750 watts, do not have pedals, and some models can exceed 60 MPH. Under Colorado law, these are treated as motorcycles, not bicycles.
Before riding, riders must ensure they are operating legally:
β
Valid driverβs license with motorcycle endorsement
β
Vehicle must be registered and display a license plate
β
Current insurance is required
π« Not allowed on sidewalks, pedestrian paths, trails, or open space areas within Elizabeth
In comparison, E-Bikes are classified into three categories:
Class 1:
β’ Pedal-assist only
β’ Motor assistance stops at 20 MPH
Class 2:
β’ Pedal-assist or throttle
β’ Motor assistance stops at 20 MPH
Class 3:
β’ Pedal-assist or throttle
β’ Motor assistance stops at 28 MPH
β’ Must be equipped with a speedometer
β’ Riders under 18 years old must wear a helmet
β
Class 1 and Class 2 E-Bikes may be used on sidewalks, bike lanes and may share the roadway with vehicles.
β οΈ Safety Reminders for Riders & Parents
-Know what type of vehicle you own β not all electric bikes are legally bicycles.
-Higher speeds mean a higher risk of serious injury.
-Wear helmets and safety equipment.
-Parents should verify their childβs bike classification before allowing use.
-Follow traffic laws just like any other vehicle operator.
Our goal is education and prevention. Understanding the law helps keep riders safe, pedestrians protected, and our community roads safe for everyone.
