Thanks to the continued support of the Union County Plant A Seed โ€“ Kids Dig In! Grant and our incredible partners at Groundwork Elizabeth, our outdoor learning spaces continues to flourish. We are especially grateful to Union County for investing in opportunities that bring hands-on environmental education to our students.

This season, our students proudly welcomed two special additions to our school orchard: a cherry tree named โ€œGeorgieโ€ and a dogwood tree affectionately named โ€œTwinkle Doggy.โ€ These newest members join our growing collection of plum, peach, and apple trees, creating a vibrant space where students can learn about nature, sustainability, and the rewards of caring for living things.

Our raised garden beds are also thriving with new seedlings, and each day our students are actively involved in planting, watering, and watching their hard work come to life.

A heartfelt thank you to Union County, Groundwork Elizabeth, and the Plant A Seed โ€“ Kids Dig In! Grant,
Ms. Clarke and Ms. De La Pena for helping us cultivate not only a beautiful garden, but also lifelong lessons in stewardship, teamwork, and community. We look forward to watching both our garden and our students continue to grow. ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒณ

The Amistad Collaborative Forum, presented by the Elizabeth Public Schools Board of Education, served as both a collaboration and celebration highlighting the districtโ€™s commitment to implementing the Amistad Curriculum throughout its schools. Elizabeth Public Schools continues to be recognized as one of the leading school communities dedicated to expanding the scope and impact of the Amistad Curriculum by integrating meaningful African and African American history, culture, and contributions into the curriculum.
Distinguished guests and district representatives including Dr. Olga Hugelmeyer participated in the forum and provided insight into the importance of the Amistad Curriculum and the many ways Elizabeth Public Schools brings this curriculum to life for students. Dr. Olga Hugelmeyer stated how the Amistad Curriculum has provided a bridge for both the district and the community to come together and form this work.
Terence C. Reilly School No. 7 was proudly featured during the collaborative forum event, as one of the schools that successfully contributes to the implementation of the Amistad Curriculum . Students in Mrs. McGrathโ€™s 8th grade art class created cardboard relief African masks inspired by the rich artistic traditions and cultures of various regions throughout Africa. Through this project, students explored the history, symbolism, and purpose of African masks, learning how they are often used in ceremonies, celebrations, storytelling, and cultural traditions.
As part of the creative process, students were encouraged to pour their own identity into their artwork by incorporating personal artistic style, color choices, patterns, and design elements inspired by the traditional masks they studied. This allowed students to create meaningful works of art that honored African cultural traditions while also expressing their individuality and creativity.
