Shifting to a cell-phone-free school day is a big change for middle & high schoolers. Help your child feel confident before September 10 with a few simple steps at home! 🧵👇

1️⃣ Talk through anxiety: Acknowledge that feeling disconnected at first is normal. Reassure them that school staff, counselors, and administrators are there to support them.

2️⃣ Set expectations: Remind them devices will be checked in safely at arrival and returned at dismissal.

3️⃣ Emergency peace of mind: Make sure your student knows they can always use the Main Office phone if they need to reach you during the day!

The August 20, 2026, Elizabeth Board of Education business meeting, held at Donald Stewart Early Childhood Center School No. 51, opened with a moment of silence in memory of Yoland Walton, retired House Director of Halsey House at Elizabeth High School.

Following public participation, Elizabeth Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Olga Hugelmeyer presented the August Community Updates. Topics included the new Cell Phone/Personal Electronic Device Policy, immunization reminders, updating contact information in PowerSchool, U.S. News & World Report rankings for Alexander Hamilton Preparatory Academy and EHS-FJC, and an upcoming visit from the USDA to School No. 28.

Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Daryl Palmieri then presented the Operations Updates, highlighting the summer projects completed by the Operations Departments.

The Board reviewed and, following private session, approved the August agenda. At the conclusion of the private session, Dr. Hugelmeyer presented the August Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB) Report.
