Newark, NJ –- December 4, 2025 — Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Deputy Mayor of Community Engagement Jacqueline Mercado-Quiles today announced that the City of Newark is hosting free Community Brunches for homeless residents and at-risk families at the Vincent Lombardi Center of Hope at 201 Bloomfield Avenue. The inaugural brunches will be held on three consecutive Sundays, December 7, 14 and 21 from noon to 3 p.m.
“As Charles Dickens wrote so well, this is a time of year when ‘abundance rejoices, and want is felt most keenly.’ We in Newark are committed to sharing our abundance so that those in want can rejoice,” Mayor Baraka said. “I am proud of how our city collaborates with private businesses and non-profit groups, coming together as a family this holiday season to care for those in need. And I urge all of our residents to join with us to donate, volunteer and become part of this critical holiday effort.”
“These community meals are designed to offer more than just sustenance—they provide a joyful, warm experience, connecting families in need with resources, hope, and holiday magic,” said Deputy Mayor Mercado-Quiles. “They are nurturing and nourishing – for not just the body, but the soul. And they truly enrich everyone involved, the givers as much as the receivers, because all of us are united in community.”
The dinners are hosted by the City of Newark’s Department of Public Safety, Department of Recreation, Cultural Affairs & Senior Services, Department of Public Works and Office of Homeless Services; ID Newark; the Hispanic Firefighters Association of Newark; Partnership West, Inc; Wellpoint; Mantena Global Care; Equadorian-American Chamber of Commerce of NJ; Mujeres Valiosas Y de Poder; Goya, Leo’s Café El Guame; Taino’s Kitchen and el Merengue Restaurant & Lounge.
The Community Brunches will be accompanied by seasonal music enhancing the holiday spirit, and will serve as a distribution site for outerwear, blankets and other donated goods.
