Carter Democratic Party Condemn Bill Lee’s Special Session Racist Power Grab to Redraw Tennessee’s Congressional Maps
Elizabethton, Tenn. - Tennessee Governor Bill Lee officially called a special legislative session beginning Tuesday, May 5, to redraw Tennessee’s congressional districts. This comes on the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, gutting key protections under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, making it significantly harder to challenge discriminatory, racist district maps.
Statement from Sharon Hart, CCDP Chair:
“District lines are not just political boundaries. They determine who has power over critical issues like public education, healthcare access, jobs, infrastructure, public safety, and the everyday needs of Carter Countians.
This is a racist and dangerous power grab. While Carter Countians struggle with real challenges every day, state Republicans are focused on rigging the system to protect themselves and appease Donald Trump. This is an attack on democracy, fair representation, and the voices of our communities. The Carter County Democratic Party stands firmly against any attempt to dilute voter power or undermine fair representation. We are committed to organizing, mobilizing, and fighting tooth and nail to ensure every voice is heard and every community is fairly represented.”
Tennessee Republicans spent all of this year’s regular session, and the past 15+ years of their one-party control, turning a blind eye to the cost of living crisis, healthcare inaccessibility, ranking near the bottom in just about every category, but are quick to weaken minority voter power and silence Tennesseans’ voices to make Donald Trump happy. This is a racist power grab. This is also a defining fight for democracy in Tennessee. Tennessee Democrats are not backing down. Together, we will fight tooth and nail to ensure the voices of all Tennesseans will be heard. We will continue to organize fair representation.
