Devastating Fire Strikes Historic Funeral Home in Elizabethtown
Oldest Family-Owned Funeral Home in New York State Vows to Rebuild and Continue Serving the Community
Elizabethtown, NY — April 22, 2025 — With heavy hearts, we announce that a devastating fire has destroyed Heidrick Funeral Home in Elizabethtown, the longest continually operating family-owned funeral home in New York State and one of the ten oldest in the entire United States, celebrating its 196th anniversary this year.
The fire, which broke out early this morning caused catastrophic damage to the historic structure that has served generations of families with compassion, dignity, and care since its founding in 1829. While the loss is deeply felt—both in terms of the building itself and the legacy it holds—we are profoundly grateful that no one was injured.
Despite this tragic setback, we want to make it absolutely clear: Heidrick Funeral Home is still open for business. Our commitment to the Elizabethtown community and surrounding areas remains unshaken. We are already making arrangements to continue serving families without interruption, utilizing alternate locations and resources as needed. We also want to reiterate that all prearrangements are safe and not affected.
We will rebuild.
The spirit of Heidrick Funeral Home lives on in the care we provide, the trust we’ve built, and the support of the families who have walked through our doors for generations.
Thank you to all who responded.
We do not have words that adequately expresses our gratitude for the numerous fire departments, EMS, and law enforcement agencies, and Town of Elizabethtown staff who responded last night. The firefighters who responded are volunteers, who were awakened from sleep to fight a relentless fire; they ran towards the flames and into the thick smoke to put forth a valiant effort against a vicious fire. From the bottom of our hearts, to each and every responder, we thank you.
We are deeply moved by the outpouring of support from the community and ask for your continued patience and prayers during this time. Further updates will be shared as they become available.
With sincere gratitude,
Jerod & Chris Heidrick
