Today, we made the difficult decision to remove the historic Ginkgo tree located at the corner of 128 North Main and Poplar.

For well over a century, this magnificent tree has been part of the Brown-Pusey House story and a familiar landmark in our community. It has stood through generations of change, offering beauty, character, and a sense of continuity that cannot be replaced.

We understand that many people will be saddened by its removal, and we share those feelings. Decisions involving historic assets—whether buildings, landscapes, or trees—are never made lightly.

This decision was not the result of the tree’s health or condition. In fact, the Ginkgo remained a strong and thriving specimen. However, over time, its size and root system began creating significant challenges for the historic property. The roots were causing damage to the foundation of the Brown-Pusey House and creating long-term concerns for the preservation of the building. After careful evaluation and consideration of available options, it became clear that removing the tree was necessary to protect the structural integrity of this historic home.

As stewards of a 200-year-old landmark, we have a responsibility to preserve the Brown-Pusey House for future generations. Sometimes that responsibility requires making difficult decisions that balance the preservation of our landscape with the preservation of the historic structure itself.

While we mourn the loss of this beloved tree, we are grateful for the more than 100 years it stood watch over the corner of Main and Poplar. Its legacy will remain an important part of the story of the Brown-Pusey House and the countless memories created here.

Thank you for your understanding as we continue our commitment to preserving both the history and future of this special place.
