History from the Hearth!

On the Fourth Friday of each month, we’ll “cook up” a little local history to share with you!

The photographs, books, historical documents, and artifacts we feature are all housed in the Seibert Genealogy and Research Library at Winters Heritage House Museum.

This month, enjoy a little history about the Elizabethtown Fair! The wonderful Fair Book covers were created by local artist and former Winters Heritage House Museum Director Nancy Landis.

Beautiful weather, delicious food, games, rides, friends, and family—that’s what opening night at the Elizabethtown Fair was all about!

Be sure to stop by the Winters Heritage House Museum booth and join in the fun!

Try your luck at our Dime Toss! Land your dime in a glass or dish and win it!

Create a Log Cabin! Kids can make their own little log cabin and add a light to make it glow.

Build & Play! Have some hands-on fun with our train table and Lincoln Logs.

Tonight promises to be just as much fun as opening night. Come enjoy the Fair and be sure to stop by and say hello—we’d love to see you!

Welcome, Elizabethtown College Students!

The Blue Jay Walk came through downtown Elizabethtown on Saturday, August 22, and Winters Heritage House Museum was excited to be part of the welcome!

We set up a table to introduce students to the many educational, historical, and research resources available right here at the Museum and the Seibert Genealogy Research Library.

Did you know that Winters Heritage House also offers internships and volunteer opportunities in a variety of areas? Whether you’re interested in history, education, museum studies, historic preservation, genealogy, research, communications, or simply getting involved in the Elizabethtown community, we’d love to welcome you!

Our Lantern Tour Committee is hard at work preparing for the 2026 Historic Lantern Tour of Elizabethtown!

And this year, one of our exciting historical resources is all the way across the Atlantic — the Donegal County Museum in Letterkenny, Ireland!

Just a little over a month ago, members of our Elizabethtown delegation were in Letterkenny strengthening the special connection between our two communities. We could not be more excited that this relationship is now helping us explore the history behind the stories we will share during this year’s Lantern Tour.

History connects people, places, and generations — sometimes from Elizabethtown to Letterkenny and back again!

Glassware Needed for a Fun Fair Activity!

It’s almost time for the Elizabethtown Fair, and that means it’s time for some old-fashioned fun!

A favorite activity is the Winters Heritage House Dime Toss! There’s just something special about tossing a dime and trying to land it in a dish or glass—and if you do, you win it!

We need your help stocking our Dime Toss! If you have glassware, small bowls, dishes, cups, or glasses that you would like to donate, we would be very grateful.

Donations can be dropped off at the Winters Heritage House Museum on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday from 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

A Special Gift from Letterkenny, Ireland!

When our Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania delegation traveled to Letterkenny, Ireland, to celebrate the establishment of our Twin Town relationship, we were treated to a wonderful evening with local historian and author Kieran Kelly. What a memorable part of our visit!

The Winters Heritage House Museum was honored to receive a signed copy of one of Kieran’s books as a gift. We are delighted to add it to the collection in our Seibert Genealogy Research Library, where it will serve as a lasting reminder of the friendship and shared appreciation for history between Elizabethtown and Letterkenny.

Today is the last day of the Winters Heritage House Summer Kids Camp—and we don’t want it to end! Our theme this summer ...

Today is the last day of the Winters Heritage House Summer Kids Camp—and we don’t want it to end!

Our theme this summer was Colonial Life in the 1700s, and our campers were busy discovering, creating, exploring, and having fun every day!

Throughout camp, our young historians:
- Examined historical images to discover what everyday colonial life was like
- Played history-themed games enjoyed by children in the 1700s
- Read true stories about courageous men, women, and teenagers who contributed to the fight for independence
- Recreated colonial tools and kitchen utensils using clay and play dough
- Toured our original 1700s log cabins
- Put together tents to learn about life in the Continental Army
- Tried their hand at sewing
- Wrote messages with quill feathers and ink
- Learned about spies during the American Revolution and created secret messages—just like those used by George Washington and his network of spies!
- Discovered the stories of our Founding Fathers and their families

And one of our campers’ favorite projects was helping to decorate our First Ladies Doll Exhibit in the hallway of the Winters Heritage House Museum!

We invite you to stop by and see their work. The First Ladies dolls will be on display through September.

We will certainly miss our summer campers—their questions, creativity, enthusiasm, and laughter brought history to life at Winters Heritage House!

Thank you to all of our campers and families for making this summer so special. We hope you had as much fun as we did!

Our Colonial Garden is Thriving!

Thanks to the dedication of our amazing Garden Volunteers, our colonial garden is flourishing beyond expectations—and it’s making a real difference in our community!

So far this season, 76 pounds of fresh produce have been donated to the Community Cupboard in Elizabethtown.

Bobbi Thomasco, our Master Gardener, shares that one of the most meaningful parts of the garden is participating in the Adopt-A-Pantry Program through the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, providing fresh, healthy produce for local families in need.

A sneak peek at our upcoming First Ladies Madame Alexander Doll Exhibit at the Winters Heritage House Museum!

Our Heritage House Summer Camp campers are helping bring this special exhibit to life by creating beautiful handmade decorations for the display. Along the way, they’re also exploring the lives, families, and accomplishments of America’s Founding Fathers, discovering the people and stories that helped shape our nation.

History comes alive when young minds can create, explore, and connect with the past. We can’t wait to share this exhibit with our community—stay tuned for more sneak peeks!
