Good afternoon, Hardin County!

Do you know what to look for when looking at your children's, teen's, or loved one's phones? Without prior knowledge of what emojis mean in relation to drugs, they may appear relatively harmless. Here we have broken down some emojis that often translate into drug language. These emojis are supplied by the DEA's PDF list, and we only cover a few of them. For the entire PDF, click on the link below.

Good afternoon, Hardin County!

Did you know the data collected in 2024 shows that nearly 80% of fatal overdoses had at least 1 opportunity to intervene and possibly save that person's life?

This is why harm reduction, educating communities about what to look for, and how to approach a solution that works is so important. Every day, and every touch point increases the potential for someone to get the help they need to find healing and support.

The simple act of carrying naloxone could give someone one more day... and that might be the only day they need to make a change.

Medetomidine started replacing xylazine in force around June 2024.

OpioidData.org recently stated, "At a syringe service program in Pittsburgh, among samples (n=254) we analyzed in 2025, 40% of expected fentanyl samples contained no fentanyl.

(Read that again.)

Instead, 60% of expected fentanyl samples contained medetomidine as a primary drug."

And now we are seeing medetomidine in the drug supply in Kentucky as well.

Because the nature of the drug slows the heart rate and lowers blood pressure, potential overdose is much higher. Medetomidine makes the advice to quit drugs abruptly potentially lethal. The withdrawal effects create the opposite effect, high heart rate and high blood pressure creating a higher risk of heart attack.

If you know you are using this drug, or think that you might be experiencing medetomidine withdrawal, please go to the hospital! Outpatient buprenorphine in primary care, methadone clinics, and residential facilities are not prepared to handle medetomidine withdrawal. The hospital ED is going to become a more critical place to start MAT.

Naloxone doesn't have an effect on medetomidine, but because it is being added to the illicit opioid drug supply, you should definitely still use naloxone if you witness an overdose.

Please be careful if you or someone you know is actively using opioids! We are here to offer support and resources, so please reach out.
