Annual Hose & Apparatus Testing 🚒

Over the past two weeks, the Elk Grove Village Fire Department has been busy completing our annual hose and apparatus testing!

These important tests help ensure that our equipment is safe, reliable, and ready to perform when our community needs us most.

🔥 Fire Hose Testing

Fire hose must withstand significant pressure and heavy use during emergency operations. Regular testing helps us identify damaged or weakened hose before it becomes a problem on the fireground.

A hose failure can delay water delivery and create additional challenges for firefighters working to protect lives and property.

🚒 Apparatus Pump Testing

Our fire apparatus and pumps are critical to delivering the water needed to fight fires. Pump testing verifies that our pumps are operating properly and meeting performance standards.

Testing also allows us to identify and address potential issues before the equipment is needed at an emergency.

Whether our equipment is brand new or has served the department for many years, regular testing and maintenance are essential to keeping it ready to respond at a moment’s notice.

A big thank you to our firefighters and Fleet team for the time and effort they put into completing these important tests! Their work helps ensure that the Elk Grove Village Fire Department has safe, dependable equipment when it matters most.

🧑‍🚒 Ready today. Ready every day.

MABAS Division 1 Water Rescue Team Training 🌊🚒

Last week, the MABAS Division 1 Water Rescue Team hosted Regan Lipinski from Marine Sonic for two days of specialized training on side scan sonar search operations.

The first day focused on classroom instruction, where team members learned how to properly operate and interpret the sonar system. The second day put that knowledge into practice with hands on training on the water.

The team practiced searching for a variety of targets, including a van, milk crates, and a mannequin, using the side scan sonar system.

So, what exactly is side scan sonar?

The sonar unit is a torpedo shaped device that is towed behind a boat and allows rescuers to search large areas of water for victims or other submerged objects. The system also includes GPS tracking and target marking capabilities, allowing the team to track areas that have already been searched and mark targets of interest for further investigation.

During recovery operations, side scan sonar can provide a safer and more effective way to search large areas of water before putting divers in the water to investigate specific targets.

This was excellent training that helps enhance the capabilities of our Water Rescue Team and better prepares them for challenging water rescue and recovery operations.

Great job to everyone who participated, and thank you to Regan Lipinski and Marine Sonic for providing this valuable training!

This week, the Elk Grove Village Fire Department and the Itasca Fire Protection District came together for joint mutual-aid training, strengthening the partnership we rely on during real emergencies.

Training side by side not only sharpens our operational coordination and understanding of each department’s capabilities but also builds the personal connections that make teamwork seamless under pressure.

These collaborative exercises ensure that when our communities need us most, we’re already operating as one unified team.

BATTERIES DO NOT BELONG IN YOUR TRASH OR RECYCLING! 🔥🔋

Did you know that batteries can pose a serious fire hazard when thrown in the garbage or recycling?

When batteries are damaged, crushed, or come into contact with other batteries or metal, they can spark, overheat, and cause fires. Lithium batteries are especially concerning because they can ignite when damaged or crushed during the collection and recycling process.

🚫 Never place loose batteries in your trash or curbside recycling.

♻️ Elk Grove Village residents have a safe and FREE option! Household batteries can be dropped off at the Community Development front counter at Village Hall, 901 Wellington Ave., Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Accepted batteries include:
🔋 AA, AAA, C, D and 9V batteries
🔋 Button batteries
🔋 Rechargeable batteries
🔋 Lithium-ion batteries
🔋 Other approved household batteries

⚠️ Before bringing rechargeable or button batteries to Village Hall, cover the battery contacts with masking tape or place each battery in an individual self-locking plastic bag.

A small battery can create a BIG problem. Help protect our firefighters, waste and recycling workers, and our community by disposing of batteries properly!

Huge shoutout to the incredible young people interning with the Village of Elk Grove!

Last week the Fire Department immersion experience gave them a firsthand look at what it truly means to serve our community. From learning fire suppression techniques and practicing forcible entry to getting hands-on with vehicle extrication tools and thermal imaging cameras, these interns stepped up, learned fast, and gave it their all. The day wrapped with an unforgettable ride high above the Village in the Fire Truck Tower, an experience that always inspires future first responders. Programs like this not only build skills, confidence, and teamwork, but also strengthen the connection between our department and the next generation of community leaders.

Proud of their hard work and excited to see where their passion takes them next! ⭐

Training never stops here at the Elk Grove Village Fire Department:

Our firefighters routinely sharpen their skills using ventilation saws on both flat and peaked roofs—an essential tactic during structure fires. Opening the roof allows trapped smoke, heat, and toxic gases to escape, giving firefighters better visibility and safer working conditions while improving survival chances for anyone still inside.
This critical training helps our crews move faster, perform safer, and protect our community more effectively. Strong skills save lives, and we’re committed to staying ready for every emergency.

Earlier this week, Fire Chief Rich Mikel had the pleasure of being the guest speaker for this wonderful group at the Sheila Ray Adult Center. His presentation included methods by which aging adults can prevent falls in their residence to stay safe and healthy, and safe practices to prevent fires and burn injuries while cooking. As always, the critical importance of properly working smoke alarms and CO alarms was also discussed.

Last week, crews put in hands‑on work toward becoming highly capable Fire Apparatus Engineers (FAEs). They focused on essential skills such as relay pumping, managing multiple hose lines of varying sizes, pumping into standpipes and aerial devices, and calibrating friction‑loss calculations.

These are not just technical exercises, but they’re vital components of safe, effective fireground operations. The dedication shown by our firefighters, especially in challenging weather, reflects our commitment to being ready when the community needs us most.

Training today means better service tomorrow. Proud of our teams for stepping up and putting in the work.
