We’re kicking off our four-part Mosquito Trap Series with The Gravid Trap! 🦟

Gravid traps are one of the tools our team uses to collect mosquitoes for surveillance and testing. The trap uses water designed to attract female mosquitoes looking for a place to lay their eggs. Once collected, the mosquitoes can be identified and tested for West Nile virus.

Take a look at how our team sets up a gravid trap in the field and how it helps us monitor mosquito activity throughout Sacramento and Yolo counties.

West Nile virus activity remains high in Yolo County.

As we move through the peak of mosquito season, it's more important than ever to protect yourself from mosquito bites. The District continues to monitor virus activity, conduct mosquito surveillance, and implement mosquito control efforts throughout the region.

You can help reduce your risk by using an EPA-registered insect repellent, eliminating standing water around your home, and avoiding mosquito activity around dawn and dusk whenever possible.

Most people infected with West Nile virus never develop symptoms. However, when symptoms do occur, they can include fever, headache, fatigue, body aches, nausea, vomiting, swollen lymph glands, an occasional skin rash, and eye pain.

As we move through peak mosquito season, mosquito activity and the risk of West Nile virus continue to increase. The best way to protect yourself is to prevent mosquito bites by using an EPA-registered insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants when mosquitoes are most active, and eliminating standing water around your home.

Behind every mosquitofish is a lot of care before it ever reaches a neighborhood pond or fountain. 🐟

Our Fisheries team raises and cares for mosquitofish and other larva-eating fish that help reduce mosquito populations naturally. Once they're ready, the fish are collected and distributed to suitable water sources throughout Sacramento and Yolo counties, where they feed on mosquito larvae before they become biting adults.

Biological control is just one of the many tools the District uses to help protect public health.
