South Area People First

South Area People First A self-advocacy group run by and for people with developmental disabilties. Each chapter is run by people with developmental disabilities who elect officers.

South Area People First is one of 15 chapters in ten-county Region 3 of Northern California. It operates under the Self-Advocacy Coordination Project of the Supported Life Institute. We have advisor's who assist, but we make our own decisions. We serve the areas of Elk Grove and South Sacramento.

Well the manager care Organization (MCOG) Tax is due to expire in June, if legislature doesn’t pass it again, funding that regional centers depend on will be cut. The governor did approve $80 million that is not related to the tax to do things like hire service coordinators, group home living services, start education on new federal rules for programs, and help people move out of developmental centers (All centers aside from one will be closed by 2021). Supplemental security payments will be increased by 3% and social security will be increased by 1.8%, however this is all a year away. MCOG is currently deadlocked in the senate. Republicans do not want to pass the MCOG Tax because they have some money in reserve, but democrats believe this will not be enough. If MCOG tax doesn’t pass there will be a significant cut to the system. Organizations will be unable to operate and will go out of business. So call your local legislators and tell them you want to pass the managed care organization tax so services can continue
