FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Bomb Threat Response at Elk River High School

Elk River, Minn. – The Elk River Police Department (ERPD) was notified at 8:43 a.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, regarding a potential bomb threat specific to Elk River High School. ERPD and ISD 728 took immediate action to ensure the safety of all students and staff.

ERPD began utilizing all available investigative resources and law enforcement partner agencies to determine the credibility of the threat. Following the evacuation of the school, a protective sweep was conducted with the use of K9s, and no threats were found.

We thank the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office, K9 Units from the Minneapolis and University of Minnesota Police Departments, and the Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives (ATF) for their assistance.

While all evening school activities have been cancelled for the day, an increased law enforcement presence will remain onsite and nearby. The investigation to determine the source of the threat is ongoing.

The following message is being sent to all Elk River High School families,

The safety and security of our students and staff at Elk River High School are our top priorities.

We are actively working in close coordination with the Elk River Police Department to investigate a threat specifically directed at Elk River High School and to assess its credibility. Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of everyone in our school community, we will be evacuating the building at 10:45 am.

Student Pickup & Release Instructions

Bus Transportation: All regular routes will be started after the 10:45 am dismissal.
Parent Pickup: Regular parent pickup procedures will begin after the 10:45 am dismissal.
Student Drivers: Student drivers will proceed to leave the school grounds after the 10:45 dismissal
We understand that rumors and misinformation spread quickly, especially on social media. We ask for your cooperation in avoiding the spread of unverified information during this active investigation. If you or your student have specific details regarding a potential threat, please report it immediately to law enforcement, school administration, or via SaySomething.net.

We will provide additional updates as law enforcement provides more information. Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we work to keep our school community safe.
