Celebrate Iowa Drinking Water and Wastewater Workers Week!

Water and Wastewater Workers of Iowa Week is scheduled for August 23 through August 29, 2026. This marks the 16th year that a governor has signed a proclamation honoring the water and wastewater workers of Iowa. It is a week set aside for Iowans to honor those workers in the water and wastewater industry for their commitment to their community, public health, and the environment.

The City of Elkader contracts with PeopleService Inc for the operation of our water and wastewater systems. Staff that cover Elkader include Kim, Tim, Jared and Seth.

Reminder: City ordinance prohibits dogs from being at large.
“At large” means off the premises of the owner and not under the control of a competent person, restrained within a motor vehicle, or housed in a veterinary hospital or kennel.

Please put a leash on your dog ANYTIME it is outside. This is for the safety of the public and for the safety of the dog.

Also, we always will remind dog owners to be responsible and clean up after your dog!

Thank you!

With kids headed back to school it is a good time to remind property owners that trimming trees is the responsibility of the adjacent property owners. Branches should be at least 15' over the roadway and 8' above the sidewalks.

Also, if you live near an intersection please check line of site issues with trees and shrubs.

We have already received a couple of reports of trees being too low for those walking on sidewalks.

Thank you for your cooperation!

On Sunday, August 16, if weather allows, a resident is having a tree removed on the 900 block of Carter Street (this is the block along the hospital). One lane will remain open most of the time but there will be a period of time when the entire street will be closed. It should not be closed more than 1/2 hr.

A reminder that blowing grass into the street is prohibited by City code. Grass and leaf debris can clog storm sewer inlets. Wet grass can actually be dangerous to motorcyle riders as well.

If you hire someone to mow your lawn please make sure they are aware of this. They have to mow the first couple of rows by the street so that it blows the clippings back into the yard. Or they could put a bag on the mower.

Thank you for your cooperation!
