August 26, commemorates the struggles of women to be heard, as fierce advocates who gained the right to vote. Also, known as women’s suffrage, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, guarantees all American women the right to vote. President Richard Nixon issued a proclamation in 1972 which designated August 26th as Women’s Rights Day and this was the first official recognition of the day. Later, in 1973, Congress approved the resolution and August 26th officially became Women’s Equality Day. Learn more at your local branch of the Northwestern Regional Library! Today, our libraries join the world in sadness and in remembrance of an extraordinary artist, advocate, and the ultimate champion for early literacy.

Dolly Parton’s boundless generosity transformed generations of readers. In honor of her father, she founded the Imagination Library in 1995 to ensure every child had books at home, eventually gifting hundreds of millions of books to children everywhere.

Dolly didn't just sing about stories... no, she made sure children had the chance to read stories. Thank you, Dolly, for sharing your light, kindness, generosity, and love of books with us all. 🩷📚

On August 21, National Senior Citizens Day recognizes the achievements of the more mature representatives of our nation. This day provides an opportunity to showcase our appreciation for their dedication, accomplishments, and services they give throughout their lives. Some options of activities to do might include: spending time with a senior citizen by doing something fun; help them with chores and errands, encourage them to share stories and memories or maybe plan to volunteer at a seniors home. Check with your local Northwestern Regional Library to find out more about Senior Citizens in your area and how you can help out! We’re here for YOU! , , , ,

Today we held our annual Staff Development Day and it was amazing! There were smiles, laughter, and even some bonus friendly faces! We learned a lot together and made many plans, all of them focused on the communities that we proudly serve. We finished out the day with a craft and we can't wait to showcase them to our patrons.

Staff - If you took photos from today, be sure to post them in the comments!

On August 19, 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt established the first National Aviation Day through a proclamation, declaring Orville Wright’s birthday to encourage citizens to participate in activities that promote interest in aviation. Orville Wright, along with his brother Wilbur, made significant contributions to powered flight right here in North Carolina. Although they were originally from Ohio, the first flight took place in North Carolina at Kitty Hawk in the Outer Banks.
