🚨 SCAM STOPPED IN ITS TRACKS — GREAT WORK BY ALERT CITIZENS & OFFICERS! 🚨
On the morning of March 17, 2026, the Elkin Police Department responded to a report of a potential scam involving a local resident and their family members.
A caller posing as an “FBI agent” attempted to convince the victim to withdraw $15,500 in cash, claiming it needed to be “protected” from suspicious bank activity. The victim was then instructed to deposit the money into an account — and when that failed, to place the cash in a mailbox for pickup.
Thankfully, a vigilant family member acting as Power of Attorney stepped in and contacted our department before any money was lost.
👮‍♂️ Officers quickly coordinated with the victim, advising them not to place any money in the mailbox but to continue communicating with the suspect while officers monitored the area.
Shortly after, a black SUV was spotted nearby, matching the suspect’s anticipated pickup attempt. When the occupants observed law enforcement in the area, the driver made a U-turn in the roadway in an apparent attempt to avoid interaction with officers. The vehicle was then stopped by Sergeant Blackburn and Corporal Cave, who were already positioned nearby.
💥 What officers discovered:
• Large amounts of cash
• Banking card
• Two fi****ms
• Ma*****na and drug paraphernalia
🚔 Outcome:
Six individuals from Florida were taken into custody and charged with:
• Conspiracy to Commit False Pretense
• Concealed Weapon Violations
• Possession of Ma*****na
All suspects were transported to the Surry County Detention Center under secured bond.
👏 We want to recognize the outstanding work of Sergeant Blackburn, Corporal Cave, and Lt. Detective Hall, along with the assistance of the Jonesville Police Department and Surry County Sheriff’s Office.
⚠️ REMEMBER:
Law enforcement agencies will NEVER ask you to withdraw or transfer money to “protect” your funds. If you receive a suspicious call:
• Hang up immediately
• Do NOT send money
• Contact your local police department
💙 This case is a perfect example of how awareness, quick thinking, and teamwork can stop criminals in their tracks.
