Boys Soccer opened its home season Wednesday under the lights, falling in a tough one to Upper Moreland, 1-0. The Color Guard, Pep Band and Drumline impressed with their performance prior to the game.

Cheltenham Elementary fifth grade teacher Dr. Andrew Vassall was recently featured in the online outlet “Dosage Magazine” for the launch of “The Blue Crayon,” the second book in Vassall’s “Compassionate Crayon” series, following last year’s release of “The Black Crayon.” The magazine story chronicles Dr. Vassall’s journey from self-publishing to receiving a 10-book deal from Winged Publications, and growing up with a learning disability.

“The Blue Crayon” is a heartfelt story about emotions, self-control, and learning how to stay calm during difficult moments. Released during Mental Health Awareness Month, this inspiring book encourages children to express their feelings, build confidence, and understand that being calm can be a true superpower.

Beyond teaching packed weekly class rotations, school librarians across the Cheltenham School District are inspiring students through local business partnerships, interactive author visits, and academic competitions. These multifaceted initiatives build a vibrant culture of reading inside and outside the classroom.

Local partnerships give students extra motivation to turn the page. Through the Books and Bundts program inaugurated by Glenside Librarian Christine Jenkins with Nothing Bundt Cakes in Abington, Glenside students who log 400 minutes of monthly reading can bring their completed tracker to the store for a free bundlet. Additional community partnerships, including an upcoming reward program with Applebee's, are in development.

PTO-funded author visits give elementary students direct access to celebrated writers. Glenside Elementary recently hosted author Baptiste Paul, who shared insights into life on the island of St. Lucia and introduced students to St. Lucian Creole. Students with Caribbean heritage participated in an intimate small-group lunch with the author, blending literacy engagement with cultural connection.

Literacy efforts extend well beyond the standard curriculum. District teams from the elementary schools, Cedarbrook East, Cedarbrook, and Cheltenham High School regularly participate in the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (MCIU) Reading Olympics.

During the summer, students stayed engaged through public library reading programs, earning custom buttons, bookmarks, and showcase space on school bulletin boards.

From hands-on classroom instruction to local business collaborations, district librarians continue to construct creative, high-impact pathways that foster a lifelong love of reading.

Students at Myers learned how they can earn Peace Train tickets and Class Compliment Cards (A.K.A. CCCs) during this morning’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) assembly. Students taught “Peace Train Dane,” teacher Dana Diamondstein in a train conductor costume, what they just learned and had their knowledge tested with trivia questions.

Cheltenham High School will dismiss at noon today, Tuesday, September 1 due to the heat advisory in our area and the resulting high temperatures within the building, which make classrooms and common areas unsuitable for students and staff.

Morning and afternoon EASTERN students will not be impacted by this change. All athletic practices, club and activity meetings, home and away competitions, open workouts, and other scheduled after-school programming are canceled. Additionally, all evening activities are canceled, including color guard/pep band practice.
