One more time— Fireworks are not legal in Elko County.

We aren’t Joe Dirt, we don’t need any:

“Hoosker Do’s, Hoosker Don’ts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers — with or without the scooter stick…”

Around here, that’s how you lose fingers, start fires, and meet firefighters for all the wrong reasons.

This is someone’s last weekend with all 10 fingers. Don’t let it be yours.

Leave the fireworks to the approved professional shows.

PSOM Watch — Potential NV Energy De-Energization

NV Energy has issued an initial Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) Watch for portions of East Elko and Spring Creek due to forecasted fire weather conditions.

Potential outage window:

Saturday, June 27
10:00 AM to 10:00 PM

Potential areas impacted:

East Elko — estimated 1,413 customers
Spring Creek — estimated 6,789 customers

This is currently a potential de-energization, not a confirmed outage.

To clarify, this is not being requested by the fire service or local fire departments. A PSOM is a preventative measure taken by NV Energy during elevated fire weather conditions to help reduce wildfire risk.

During these events, NV Energy should set up customer resource centers with power charging ability, ice, water, and cooling areas. When we know the location of the center or centers, we will share that information.

Please take time now to prepare:

* Charge phones, medical devices, and backup batteries
* Have water, food, medications, and fuel ready
* Know how to manually open garage doors and gates
* Check on neighbors, especially those with medical or access needs
* Use generators safely and never operate them inside a home or garage

Customers who depend on electrically operated medical equipment should review NV Energy’s Green Cross program:

On August 30, 2025, Elko County Regional Communication Center was contacted for a female who was not feeling well and became unconscious and stopped breathing. The dispatcher, Beachel, instructed the husband on CPR; he performed it until responders arrived on scene. Elko County Fire Station 28 crew (Captain Barry and Firefighter Burt) responded. They assumed CPR and placed an AED on the patient and shocked her. They continued CPR until Elko County Ambulance arrived where Paramedic Metz and AEMT Peavey took over care. The patient was found to be in ventricular fibrillation; she was shocked multiple times and was administered medications. After two more rounds she had regained a normal rhythm with a pulse. She was transported to Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital where care was continued and she was eventually flown to Utah to receive more advanced care and she was able to make a full recovery.
With the patient's permission, we are proud and happy to share her powerful, awe-inspiring story. The crews who responded from Elko County Fire District and Elko County Ambulance Service as well as our dispatcher from Elko County Regional Communication Center, who took the call, were able to meet the patient and spend time talking about her progress.

Excellent teamwork, great communication, and fantastic CPR lead to the best possible outcome in a very scary situation.
