On August 30, 2025, Elko County Regional Communication Center was contacted for a female who was not feeling well and became unconscious and stopped breathing. The dispatcher, Beachel, instructed the husband on CPR; he performed it until responders arrived on scene. Elko County Fire Station 28 crew (Captain Barry and Firefighter Burt) responded. They assumed CPR and placed an AED on the patient and shocked her. They continued CPR until Elko County Ambulance arrived where Paramedic Metz and AEMT Peavey took over care. The patient was found to be in ventricular fibrillation; she was shocked multiple times and was administered medications. After two more rounds she had regained a normal rhythm with a pulse. She was transported to Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital where care was continued and she was eventually flown to Utah to receive more advanced care and she was able to make a full recovery.
With the patient's permission, we are proud and happy to share her powerful, awe-inspiring story. The crews who responded from Elko County Fire District and Elko County Ambulance Service as well as our dispatcher from Elko County Regional Communication Center, who took the call, were able to meet the patient and spend time talking about her progress.
Excellent teamwork, great communication, and fantastic CPR lead to the best possible outcome in a very scary situation.
