The story of Communities In Schools began in the 1970s, when Founder Bill Milliken, then a youth advocate in New York City, came up with the idea of bringing community resources inside a public school building – where they are accessible, coordinated and accountable. In the span of a little more than 30 years, Communities In Schools has become the nation’s leading dropout prevention organization. We have a unique model that positions a coordinator inside schools to assess needs and deliver necessary resources that remove barriers to success. Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Our network is comprised of nearly 5,000 passionate professionals in 25 states and the District of Columbia. We serve the most vulnerable students in the most dropout-prone school districts, nearly 1.3 million young people in more than 3,400 schools. We are actively engaged with policy makers, school staff, parents and business partners to ensure that Communities In Schools’ services are extended to as many K-12 students as possible and that those students have access to college. Independent research demonstrates that Communities In Schools is one of a very few organizations proven to keep students in school and the only one to document that it increases graduation rates. The study also shows that a higher percentage of students served by Communities In Schools reach proficiency in 4th-grade and 8th-grade reading and math.

We want to make a special shoutout to Desert Disposal here in Humboldt County for donating the embroidery of our new French Ford Elementary School Recess Ranger vests! It made their day, The kids said “we’re official Mrs. Katie!" 🥹 💙 We could not do what we do without these amazing community partners!

Katie has brought so many fun things to FFES including the new Recess Rangers, where the bigger kids get to help the younger students during recess to make sure they are respectful, responsible and safe! 🦅💙

Including our very own Elizabeth 😍

Elizabeth sees the council as an opportunity to learn from her colleagues, share ideas, and find new ways to make the work more effective while keeping relationships at the center.

“I enjoy learning from others, sharing what works, and finding ways to make our work more effective while keeping relationships and teamwork at the heart.”

She also brings a thoughtful perspective on what leadership can look like in practice.

“Leadership isn’t about being the person at the front of the room. It’s noticing what could be better, asking questions, and taking the initiative to do something about it.”

We are proud to unveil our first-ever Site Coordinator Advisory Council! 🎉

We know that some of the most valuable insight into our work comes from the people who are closest to students every day. That’s why we brought together seven incredible site coordinators from across Nevada to share their experience, perspectives, and ideas.

Together the council represents a collective 53 years of CIS experience and will help us continue to grow and strengthen our impact.

What a week! We have had so much fun celebrating our incredible site coordinators with you all, getting to see all of your love for them and we're not done yet! 😍 It's day 4 and we are celebrating Our Winnemucca Junior High School SC Miss Sevy! Mikayla brings her fun, adventurous spirit and contagious laughter everywhere she goes. We’re so happy to have her as part of the CIS team and our community, Thank you for all you do for our students Mikayla!

If you've lived in our community for long, you've surely seen her around or experienced the ripple effect of her kindness! From Project Santa to our Food Pantry, to sports and music festivals + beyond.. you can always find her working hard to make sure the kids and families in Humboldt County School District - NV have what they need.
