Today, C shift firefighters and Chief Johnston honored the fallen by completing the Murph workout in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our communities.

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend — it’s a day to reflect on courage, service, and sacrifice.

On Tuesday, April 7, 2026, the Elko Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the area of 7th Street and Sage Street.

We are aware of several inaccurate reports circulating regarding this incident, particularly concerning fire hydrant functionality. We want to provide the community with accurate information.

The fire was located in the attic space of a residential structure and was quickly contained and extinguished using approximately half of the fire engine’s onboard water tank. During initial operations, crews connected to a nearby fire hydrant that did not function properly. As part of standard operating procedures, firefighters immediately transitioned to an alternate hydrant in the area and continued suppression efforts without delay.

The issue with the original hydrant was promptly addressed and repaired by the City of Elko Water Department. Both the Fire Department and Water Department routinely inspect and maintain hydrants throughout the city to ensure reliability. The City of Elko Water Department continues to provide a high level of service in supporting fire protection infrastructure. Our response protocols are designed with redundancy in mind. Establishing a secondary water supply is standard practice at structure fires to ensure continuous and efficient operations. Fireground conditions are dynamic, and it is common for crews to adapt and revise tactics as situations evolve.

While the initial hydrant issue represented an operational challenge, our firefighters acted decisively, initiated an aggressive interior attack, and controlled the fire within minutes of arrival.

Local 2423 firefighters were invited to the Northeastern Nevada Museum “Second Saturday” career day. Captain Mowrey was eager to show the crew the wagon he used to ride to school in.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Battalion Chief Rizzuto. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of his family and friends. He will be missed by all

The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District (TMFPD) is deeply saddened to announce the off-duty passing of one of our members, Battalion Chief Ryan Rizzuto. Sunday night, the district was notified that he had passed away while off duty. Our entire TMFPD family is grieving this unexpected loss.

Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will not be sharing any additional details. We ask the community and the media to allow the family and our personnel time and space to process this profound loss.

Critical incident support resources are now available to all TMFPD members. We recognize that events like this impact not only our organization but also the broader community we serve, and we are committed to supporting one another through this challenging time.

Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Chief Rizzuto. We ask the community to please keep them in your hearts and prayers.
