Main Street Housing, Inc.

Main Street Housing, Inc. MSH develops and manages quality, affordable, independent housing for individuals and families living with mental health disabilities.

Main Street Housing, Inc. began as a program of On Our Own of Maryland in 1999 and incorporated as a subsidiary organization in 2001. The founding members had extensive experience in the public mental health system and recognized an opportunity to both improve the quality of life for countless individuals and families and to help transform how the sector conceptualized of housing for people with d

isabilities. Historically, housing opportunities for people with psychiatric disabilities and low income have been tied to their participation in mental health services. This creates a paradox: achieving more independence and psychiatric wellness can place a person's housing in jeopardy. With the support of leaders in the mental health consumer movement and state administrators, Main Street Housing, Inc. launched as a consumer-run organization with an effective and recovery-based model for the development of affordable, independent housing in the community. Although we lease exclusively to individuals and families living with psychiatric disabilities, we firmly believe that being a good tenant should be the only fundamental condition a person has to meet to maintain quality, permanent housing that allows real recovery and wellness to happen. Our Senior Regional Property Manager, Gloria Bowen, received the John F. Plaskon Special Recognition Award this week! This award recognizes those that go above and beyond in working with clients of Crossroads Community & Corsica River Mental Health.

As part of the presentation, Crossroads had this to say about Gloria's work in the community:
"In moments of crisis, she is often the first to step in, offering both practical solutions and emotional reassurance. She regularly facilitates house meetings to address difficult topics, resolve conflicts, and foster mutual respect among housemates. Her thoughtful guidance strengthens community bonds and creates supportive living spaces where clients feel safe and empowered.
Her compassion, dedication, and unwavering support have had a profound impact on the lives of the clients she serves. She is a true leader, advocate, and role model, making her an exemplary recipient of the John Plaskon Special Recognition Award".

We are so happy to see Gloria's hard work widely recognized!

Today is my birthday, and had the wonderful gift of hearing and meeting Bishop Curry !!!!!

I had the chance today to hear retired Presiding Bishop Curry give a talk about Martin Luther King's Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? I had the chance to meet him, and talked briefly about our mission at Main Street Housing where we work to help folks with psychiatric disabilities live in real community. I felt so honored to meet him, was awed by his talk today, and felt very proud when he remarked that Main Street Housing is"... truly on a mission from God".

Main Street Housing would like to thank Home Builders Care Foundation, Inc. for their generous grant in 2024 to replace the old, worn carpet throughout the living room, dining room, and all bedrooms of our property in Easton, MD. The family who lives there reports that it feels like living in a new house! The new flooring is much easier to clean, does not harbour allergens like carpet does, and increases the overall appearance and longevity of the property. Thanks so much from Main Street Housing & the tenants. We are very grateful for the funding!
