Public Safety Announcement:

The Benton County Sheriff's Office and numerous Fire Departments responded to the Badger Canyon Fire over the weekend. As fire crews worked around the clock, the air crews were met with some interference. Drone operators were flying way too close to the fire and the air crews.

Reminder: Per the FAA, Drone operators who conduct unsafe or unauthorized operations face fines up to $75,000 per violation.

More importantly, it's an unnecessary safety risk and distraction to the pilots and ground crews. Those little drones can cause major issues during an emergency. If there's aircraft nearby, your drone should be on the ground.

Please don't divert critical resources and have us follow your drone home. 👍

National Fire News: March 20, 2026. The National Preparedness Level has increased to 2 (PL 2) as fire activity begins to expand across multiple geographic areas.

This step reflects a familiar seasonal shift. In both February and March, PL 2 has historically marked the point where activity becomes more coordinated at a national level, even if overall demand for resources remains manageable.

If you live near the Yakima River, you should be following the latest information on the flooding. If you have not signed up for CodeRED following the link from the Benton County Emergency Services, you should do that now. If you signed up in the past, you should follow the new links, as they had to rebuild the system after a hack.
