This Memorial Day, Derby Fire Department pauses to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

We are forever grateful for the heroes who gave their lives protecting our freedom. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

As we enjoy time with family and friends, let us also take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of this day and remember those who are no longer with us because they gave everything for others.

Today, May 4, is International Firefighters’ Day, and we are taking a moment to send a special shout-out to the dedicated crew at our amazing station!

For over 40 years, this department has been a cornerstone of our community. What makes Derby VFD truly special is their grit and independence day & night!

From the first charter members in 1983 to the team serving today, these volunteers have spent four decades proving that "community" is a verb. They don't just answer the call; they build the department from the ground up to make sure that call is always answered.

We are proud to have the "Thin Red Line" standing strong right here in Derby.

“Breaking news: it’s raining 🌧️

Also breaking news: the burn ban did NOT get washed away 🔥🚫

We repeat… this is not a ‘light your brush pile’ kind of rain. This is a ‘slow down, turn your headlights on, and don’t slide into a ditch’ kind of rain.

If your plan today involves fire—go ahead and cancel it. If your plan involves driving like it’s sunny and dry—also cancel that 😅

Help your local firefighters out: no burning, drive carefully, and let us stay at the station telling the same stories for the 100th time. Everybody wins!

Join us for what many say is the best spaghetti in Richmond County, all while supporting your local fire department. Every dollar raised goes directly back into the department to help us continue serving our community.

Due to dry conditions and lack of rainfall, the state-issued burn ban remains in effect statewide. Outdoor burning is prohibited but isn’t the only ignition source for wildfire, especially in high-risk conditions.

Farm equipment and machine use can also start wildfires. While working outdoors, be mindful of your equipment, and watch for sparks!

Check for and fix fire hazards before operating farm equipment or machines.
👉Remove any buildup of crop residue around the engine, exhaust system, belts and chains.
👉Repair damaged exhaust system components, worn or frayed drive belts, broken or exposed electrical wiring, worn or misaligned moving parts which can indicate a lack of lubricant, and signs of leaking fluids, oil and fuel.
👉For portable, gasoline-powered equipment, make sure you have a properly functioning spark arrester installed.
