Remembering Deputy Frank Miller

Today marks the 80th anniversary of the line of duty death of Deputy Frank Miller. Deputy Miller tragically passed away after suffering a fatal heart attack during a struggle with a female prisoner.

Deputy Miller served our agency with dedication and integrity for 29 years. He was a devoted husband and father, survived by his wife and ten children.

The HCSO honors Deputy Miller’s sacrifice and the immense loss his family endured. His service and commitment to our community will never be forgotten.

This morning, Sheriff Harris and members of the Howard County Sheriff's Office gathered to celebrate the remarkable career and retirement of Captain Mike Hajek.

Captain Hajek has dedicated more than 38 years of service to the citizens of Howard County (23 years with HCSO and 15 with HCPD) as a law enforcement officer. Prior to joining Howard County, he served six years with the Baltimore City Police Department, bringing his total law enforcement career to an extraordinary 44 years of service to the people of Maryland.

Throughout his career, Captain Hajek has exemplified professionalism, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to public service. His impact on this agency, his colleagues, and the community will be felt for years to come.

Please join us in congratulating Captain Hajek on his well-earned retirement and thanking him for more than four decades of dedicated service. We wish him nothing but happiness, health, and success in this next chapter.

Thank you for your service, Captain Hajek, you will be greatly missed!

Sheriff Harris and the entire HCSO would like to thank everyone who participated and came out to support the Law Enforcement Torch Run this morning. A special shout out to our Special Olympic Athlete, Kal’El. The HCSO raised just under $2,000 this year.

Sheriff Harris was honored to attend FOP Lodge #131 Annual Car Show this past weekend. It was a great event filled with amazing vehicles, community spirit, and support for our local law enforcement family. Thank you to everyone who participated, organized, and came out to make the day such a success!

On May 13, 2026, members of the Howard County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard participated in the National Police Week Candlelight Vigil hosted by Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) in Washington, D.C.

Honor Guard members proudly stood post along the Cordon of Honor as family members of our fallen law enforcement heroes were escorted to their seats for the ceremony, a solemn tribute recognizing their sacrifice, loss, and enduring strength.

We are proud of the dedication and commitment our Honor Guard members demonstrate year-round as they represent the Howard County Sheriff’s Office with honor and respect at events of profound meaning to the community and the law enforcement profession.

During National Police Week, the Howard County Sheriff’s Office proudly recognizes and honors the courageous law enforcement officers who serve and protect our community each day.

We are grateful for the dedication, professionalism, and sacrifice demonstrated by law enforcement across Howard County and throughout our nation. We also remember and pay tribute to the fallen heroes who gave their lives in the line of duty.

Last Friday, a Memorial Ceremony was held at HCPD Headquarters in Ellicott City to honor all fallen heroes, including HCSO fallen hero Deputy Sheriff Frank J. Miller. Members of the HCSO Honor Guard, along with many HCSO personnel, attended the ceremony to pay their respects and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
