In the next few months, on the roads in Ellington and the surrounding towns, you may notice one of our Deputy Chiefs on his bike getting his miles in. Karl Neubecker is training for the 9/11 Ride for Resilience, a 343 mile, 5 day bicycle ride from Boston to Ground Zero in NYC. They will arrive on 9/10 to honor the 25th anniversary of September 11th. The ride is organized and benefits Livestrong, as well as the Boston Fire Cancer Foundation and the Friends of Firefighters, a NYC non-profit dedicated to providing mental and emotional support to members of the FDNY. There are many NYC firefighters still suffering from 9/11-related cancers and illnesses, along with the mental trauma from that day, and many of the proceeds collected for this ride will directly benefit these heroes.
Karl's goal is to complete 2000 training miles and raise $5000 for the charities. If so inclined, please donate at: https://impact.livestrong.org/fundraisers/karlneubecker/first-responder-ride-for-resilience

If you see Karl out on the road, give him a few feet of space and a friendly honk when you pass him. EVFD is proud to support him and we hope the town of Ellington is too!

A big THANK YOU to Troop 96 for their help in washing our apparatus this morning in preparation for our Memorial Day parades. They even helped sweep out our bays! The time spent with us this morning is helping them earn their Citizenship in the Community badges. Great work, Scouts!

EVFD lost someone important to us this weekend. Robert Sandberg, a member for over 65 years, passed with his family by his side. He was an active member for many years, serving as a firefighter, EMT, driver and Captain. He was also a past president of Ellington Volunteer Ambulance Corps. He served Ellington honorably and we will miss him greatly.

Yesterday afternoon EVFD was called to the trails behind the YMCA for a horse trapped in the mud. A section of bridge gave way as the horse was crossing, causing it to fall into the mud below. With some encouragement and assistance the horse was able to free itself from the mud. One patient was evaluated for a possible leg injury.

EVFD is very proud to be at Old School Harley Davidson this morning for the unveiling of Tim Duffy’s motorcycle. A member of FDNY, he rode his motorcycle to ground zero on 9/11, accidentally creating a famous photo from that tragic morning. The bike fell into disrepair but has been restored from the ground up by Old School HD to brand new condition. We are proud to honor Tim, his work and his legacy.
