Peak fall migration is underway!

Millions of birds are making their way south over Wisconsin, with BirdCast reporting an estimated 17.7 million birds in flight last night alone.

Most migration happens at night, beginning about 30–45 minutes after sunset and peaking a few hours later. One simple way we can help these travelers? Turn off unnecessary outdoor lights at night.

Artificial light can disorient migrating birds, draw them toward buildings, increase the risk of collisions, and waste the precious energy they need for their journey. Light pollution can also reduce nighttime insect populations—an important food source for migrating birds.

Tonight, consider switching off outdoor and unnecessary lighting and giving our feathered visitors a darker, safer path through Door County.
