As Spring Break approaches, the Mississippi Highway Patrol expects a significant surge in traffic volume this week, with numerous students on break and families traveling throughout the state. Troopers will be strategically deployed to enforce traffic regulations, ensure seatbelt safety, deter distracted driving, and identify impaired drivers on the interstates. We advise all travelers to plan ahead, depart early, and ensure a safe arrival to their destination.

Nearly two dozen fire deaths have occurred in Mississippi so far in 2025 and the Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s office says there were no working smoke alarms in at least 15 of those fatalities.

We first want to Thank everyone in the Union Community for the support that’s given to the Fire Dept in the community. The members at Union take a lot of pride in wanting to help the community. Union with a lot of support from the BOS and the community, now has a 2024 Rosenbauer Engine, 2019 and 2012 Ford Brush Trucks, and a 2007 Sterling Tanker.

We have had a few people in our community that thinks we don’t do anything so I wanted to share what Union call runs were in January.

1 - Chicken house compost shed fire
5 - different structure fires that we went and assisted with.
1 - camper fire
3 - grass fires
2 - motor vehicle wrecks
3 - medical calls

January alone Union went to every call that went out other than 4 medical calls.

Please continue to give support to the Fire Service in Jones county. All 18 Departments depend on the support from our different communities.

Please be mindful of traveling for the next two days and stay home if you can. Please help the First Responders out. Your snow is going to look like your neighbors snow, so no need to get out on the roads and put yourself in danger.

Weather Closure Announcement
From the Office of the Superintendent

Dear Jones County School District Community,

In coordination with local emergency management officials, due to the significant winter weather threat beginning predawn Tuesday, January 21, 2025, and continuing through much of the day, all Jones County Schools and district offices will be closed on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. The forecast predicts heavy snow accumulation of 2–4 inches, potentially mixed with sleet, leading to dangerous travel conditions. Additionally, power outages are a possibility.

With temperatures not expected to rise above 31°F on Tuesday and wind chills dropping into the single digits on Wednesday morning, schools will also remain closed on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. This decision allows time for road conditions to be evaluated for fallen tree limbs, lingering ice, and other hazards by our transportation department.

The safety of our students, staff, and community remains our top priority. We encourage everyone to exercise caution if traveling and to prepare for potential disruptions caused by the weather.

We will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as necessary. Please stay tuned to district communications for further information.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Stay safe!

Sincerely,
B.R. Jones, PhD
Superintendent of Jones County Schools
