Southern Wisconsin has a VERY HIGH risk of fires as we head into this holiday weekend. The low humidity and high winds in the forecast combined with dry vegetation are creating a dangerous fire threat. Yesterday we assisted Menomonee Falls working to control a very large brush fire that burned over 400 acres. It's critical that you do your part to prevent wildfires this weekend!

The snow from this storm is very wet and heavy! We wanted to remind everyone to take breaks and stay safe while shoveling today

Good morning everyone, now that folks are starting to get out and start shoveling here are a few reminders when it comes to safe shoveling. The snow was a wetter snow, especially closer to the Lake Michigan. So take frequent breaks and push the snow, don't lift! #wiwx

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 6pm Tuesday. Travel could be very difficult at times. Stay safe! #stormready

It's that time of the year that we'd normally be having our annual open house! While we miss seeing all of you we hope everybody is staying safe. This year's Fire Prevention Week focus is kitchen safety. With more people staying home, the risk for Kitchen fires is increasing. Did you know that cooking is the number one cause of fires in the home? #FirePreventionWeek

Even as we work through the current emergency, we still take time to remember another and reflect on these words, inscribed on a plaque at the 9/11 Memorial:
"May the lives remembered, the deeds recognized, and the spirit reawakened be eternal beacons, which reaffirm respect for life, strengthen our resolve to preserve freedom, and inspire an end to hatred, ignorance and intolerance." #neverforget

ReadyWisconsin

When thunder roars, go indoors! ReadyWisconsin is urging everyone to make sure they know what to do when they see lightning or hear thunder nearby. Lightning Safety Awareness Day in Wisconsin is Tuesday, June 23.

“Thunderstorms can develop quickly this time of year, creating the threat from lightning strikes to those caught outdoors,” said Dr. Darrell L. Williams, Wisconsin Emergency Management Administrator. “Even if the sky directly overhead may be clear, lightning can travel several miles from the center of a storm. If you can hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you.”

According to the National Lightning Safety Council, 21 people were struck and killed by lightning in the United States in 2019, while at least four people have been killed by lightning strikes in the US so far this year. The majority of those killed were participating in outdoor recreational activities at the time they were struck. The most recent lightning-related death reported in Wisconsin was in Minocqua in September of 2016.

When the threat of lightning strikes is near, the safest place to seek shelter is inside a sturdy, enclosed structure, such as a house. Never seek cover under a tree or think you are safe by being low to the ground. Get out of open areas and away from bodies of water, such as lakes or rivers. Even the inside of a car with a hard top is safer than being out in the open during a thunderstorm. If you are inside a vehicle, avoid touching metal surfaces that could conduct electricity.

If a person with you is struck by lightning, health officials say you should immediately dial 911 and start performing CPR. Don’t be afraid to touch the victim – the human body does not hold an electrical charge.

Even though the forecast over the next several days looks dry and beautiful, it's a good time to make sure you're prepared for the next significant weather event. NOAA Weather radios are a great tool for receiving weather watches and warnings, especially when the power goes out. Be sure to have multiple sources of weather information when severe weather strikes! #stormready

With a chance of severe weather across much of the state tonight, it’s important to make sure you have multiple ways to be alerted about approaching storms. A NOAA Weather Radio, smart phone app, and local media are all great sources! #wiwx #ReadyWI

It's a quieter Memorial Day this year with no parade or party in our downtown area. (We will miss seeing all your smiling faces that line the parade route every year!) However, we still want to take this opportunity to thank and honor all those Veterans that have paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we hold so dear as Americans. May we celebrate and pause to remember this Memorial Day.

The Milwaukee Fire Honor Guard, INC. Honor's your page, thank you for all you do!
"Elm Grove Memorial Memories" Memorial Day is a solemn day set for those in America's armed forces, who gave their lives, bravely, without question, fighting to keep our democracy safe. At first, after The Civil War, it was called Decoration Day, it established a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Within 30 years, there was a set Memorial Day, the last Monday in May, for remembering those who gave their lives, no matter what conflict, in military service, for American's Freedom. In my opinion, Memorial Day is best spend just about twenty minutes west of Milwaukee in Elm Grove, WI. The last time I was in attendance was 25 years ago, with my husband and son. Alexei, who was to be three in August and the, Doodle, sleeping soundly inside me, who would be born in three short weeks; a week and one half late! I was so very proud of the beautiful parade they were to see. Either I had been in the parade or watched it since I was six years old. Now, after just relocating, back to Milwaukee after a long absence, I was so very happy and content to be home again, at last. For the very first time, I felt the import of the day. No, Memorial Day was not a signal that the school year was ending, nor was it a day to hang out at the lake, nor a day for a great picnic. Memorial Day is a day of prayer and remembrance of those who came and died before us, for The United States of America and all for which it stands. Through the entire parade, my tears fell and soaked into my maternity jumper. Now, I had one son and would soon have another. I felt a mother's wretched grief and fear. I remember, of all, the red convertible that carried the ancient Veterans from WWI. Then, came even more tears, as they passed and we stood and applauded. Yes, it was quite a parade in our beautiful, safe, Elm Grove. I was so proud and content as I held my husband's hand and that of our child. The Doodle slept through the whole thing. Ah yes, I know, that every aspect of what makes The United States of America Great, resides in beautiful Elm Grove, WI. ©spmp
