Did you know?
Right now, millions of tiny salmon smolts are making one of the most dangerous journeys of their lives, swimming from the freshwater streams where they hatched down to the Pacific Ocean.

In simple terms, a smolt is a young salmon that has undergone a remarkable transformation. It has changed its body chemistry to survive in saltwater, became silver for camouflage in the open ocean, and gathered in schools to begin its downstream migration.

This matters because the survival of these smolts determines how many adult salmon return to our streams in two to five years. Everything in the water along their path matters, clean water, cool temperatures, places to rest, and safe passage through culverts and channels. The land management choices we make upstream directly affect whether these smolts reach the ocean.
