Good morning Grays Harbor,
I guess it is officially official. We received the certification from Joesph Maclean, our County Auditor, stating that we won! This really happened! I am so thankful. The experience proved to be organic, fascinating and a testament that your vote does matter, especially when it comes to local politics.
I want to thank my campaign team and especially my wife Ericka. Like me, she had never been involved in something like this. We started so clunky, not knowing what to do, who to meet, or where to go. I put in for the position with only 3 hours left on the final day of signing up to run. Fueled by frustration with the incumbent, we began the journey. Our county deserved more and better in Department 3. This we knew.
Fairly soon into the process, people who knew better than us became supportive and offered key guidance. We are indebted to all of you who publicly and privately offered your suggestions. We met so many people along the journey as we attended events, met groups of professionals, worked the Fair and listened to community members about their concerns for the court system and judiciary.
Squaring off against the opponent was unnerving but it led to both of our true colors being revealed. People started to know that there was a contested judicial election and then wondering, who is this Steve Jackson? With a refreshing social media presence, occasionally spicey and always enlightening, we pressed on. Do your best. Listen to people. Lose the ego.
The process works, at least on the local level. There was a common dissatisfaction in the status quo, so an opponent ran against a judicial incumbent. We were told several times that this does not happen very often and seldom is successful. In fact, apart from the unseating of an appointed judicial officer in 2016, no one could tell us when the last time that an elected incumbent lost a judicial race in Grays Harbor County. When I asked Judge Edwards, he told me that it was at least the last 50 years that he had been practicing, and likely much longer. But, it is not a kingship with which one is entitled to possess until they choose to step down. Accountability will catch up to you at the darndest times. Elected officials, including judges, need to be accountable to the public for their decisions, their demeanor. In this race, the public spoke and accountability prevailed.
We are so thankful for all the amazing endorsements that were graciously given by both political parties and several local public officials. When we received the endorsements of Judges Svoboda and Samuel, we realized that the momentum was building and we were in this thing! We never stopped. It was exhausting working full-time and campaigning. I did several trials including a murder trial while campaigning.
Since November, we have been resting, regrouping, and preparing for what is next. I will be sworn in on January 17, at 3:30 in the Courthouse. It is open to the public and all are invited. It was because of you that we are where we are. I am humbled to be your Judge in Superior Court in our community. I will strive to do all the things that I told you I would do. I will be a good listener, consistent and the same person every day. I will not be led by ego but rather what justice means in each case that I hear. I am excited and nervous as well. I can promise you that I will do my best.
Thank you!
Steve
