A bit of history of the community of Elmont:

This document is in the Elmont Memorial Library - Local History Room - kept in the Community Series box.

While the town of Elmont was beginning to develop there was a garden club (District 16 Garden Club of Elmont) with its first meeting on July 9th, 1940 at the Elmont Road School. Their objective was to, ”Beautify the home grounds, create greater appreciation of the joys of gardening through increased knowledge of the fine art of gardening..”

During World War II, the Elmont Garden Club fostered an interest in Victory Gardens and urged members to grow their own fruits and vegetables to be canned for the winter months. Floral horticulture (the art of making artistic floral arrangements) branched out after the war.

(published date is unknown).

Does anyone remember this column: Problem Line with Anita Richterman. In the 1970’s – 1980’s Anita Richterman answered thousands of readers' questions in a Newsday column called "Problem Line." This particular question is an inquiry about the origin of the naming of Elmont.

A copy of this is saved in the Local History Collection but access to Newsday articles is available through the library databases.

The Elmont Local History Room bids adieu to an item in the collection:

Guidelines for Junior High and Middle School Education, edited by Gordon F. Vars for the Committee on Junior High School Education (Washington : National Association of Secondary-School Principals, 1966).

Its new home will be in Special Collections at Kent State University. (FB Page: https://www.facebook.com/ksuspecialcollections.) Where the editor of the book (Gordon F. Vars) was a professor emeritus. Vars was an emeritus professor of teaching, leadership and curriculum studies. He was an outstanding leader of his generation of writing about education for the middle school years.

FYI: Alton D. Lowe, whose name is inscribed on the inner front cover, was the Principal of Alva T. Stanforth Junior High School. ATS closed in 1985 and remained vacant until it was chosen to be the new home of the Elmont Library in the early 2000s.
