Smoke from wildfires in Canada is impacting air quality across our region, and some areas of Ottawa County may experience unhealthy air quality levels today. When air quality is unhealthy, there is enough pollution in the air to affect your health.

Everyone can be affected, but children, older adults, pregnant people, those with heart or lung conditions, and people who work outdoors are at greater risk. Consider limiting strenuous outdoor activities, keeping windows closed, and spending more time indoors when possible. If you experience trouble breathing, chest pain, severe coughing, wheezing, or symptoms that do not improve after moving indoors, seek medical attention.

The Harris-Elmore Fire Department regrets to announce the passing of Medic Jeff Herman Sr., a devoted member of our part-time EMS staff for 22 years. Jeff was dedicated to serving our community with not only his skills but with his heart. He was respected for his kind smile and the joy he found in being part of our fire family. Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to his family, Gibsonburg Fire Department, North Central EMS, Woodville Fire Department, and Allen Clay Joint Fire District. Jeff, you will be greatly missed. Rest easy, brother, we have it from here.
