Sunday Night Cadet Training

Our Elmwood Rescue Cadets spent Sunday night getting hands-on experience with several important EMS skills, including:

* Learning the basics of 12-lead ECGs
* Properly placing and applying 12-lead electrodes
* Practicing how to safely draw up medications
* Learning how to administer intramuscular injections

Training like this allows our cadets to build confidence, strengthen their skills, and learn more about the work of EMS providers. We’re proud of their willingness to learn and their continued dedication to serving their community!

Friday Night Lights are back!

Last night, Elmwood Rescue provided EMS standby coverage at the first Elmwood-Murdock Knights football game of the season.

We’re proud to support our student-athletes, coaches, families, and community throughout the season. Thank you to the members who volunteered their evening to help keep everyone safe!

Last Wednesday, members of Elmwood Rescue continued building their skills with our LifePak 35 cardiac monitors, getting hands-on with additional features and capabilities that help us provide better patient care in the field.

We also officially implemented our new Slishman Traction Splint Gen 2 into our equipment inventory!

This splint was made possible through a generous grant from the Elmwood Community Foundation, and we are incredibly grateful for their support of Elmwood Rescue and our community.

The Slishman Gen 2 offers several advantages over the traditional Hare traction splints we’ve been using. Its compact, lightweight design makes it easier to carry and deploy, while its simple application allows providers to apply traction quickly and efficiently. It also provides controlled traction without the bulky frame and setup associated with traditional Hare-style splints.

Another major advantage is its versatility across patient populations. The Slishman Gen 2 can be used on pediatric patients as well as adults, giving our crews an appropriate traction option when caring for younger patients with suspected femur injuries.

For our patients, that means faster application, easier patient movement, and a more versatile option for managing suspected femur fractures.

We are proud to continue investing in training and equipment that helps our members provide the best care possible to the people we serve. Thank you to the Elmwood Community Foundation for helping make this upgrade possible!

Yesterday, Elmwood Rescue was proud to be part of the Cass County Fair Parade! We had a great time being out in the community, seeing familiar faces, and helping keep everyone safe during the festivities.

Following the parade, our crew provided EMS standby coverage at the fairgrounds and midway to be ready should anyone need us.

A big thank you to everyone who waved, stopped to say hi, or came over to visit with our crew! We love being a part of the communities we serve.

And of course, thank you to our volunteers who gave their time yesterday to make sure Elmwood Rescue was there when our community needed us.

Your local volunteers. Your local EMS. Always ready to help.

Last night, Elmwood Rescue was proud to provide EMS standby coverage at the Cass County Fair during the exciting Figure 8 Races! 🏁🚑

Events like these are a great reminder of why having emergency medical personnel on-site is so important. While everyone was enjoying an action-packed evening of racing, our volunteer EMTs and Advanced EMTs were standing by, ready to respond if needed.

A huge thank you to our dedicated volunteers who continue to give their time to help keep our community and fairgoers safe.

We’re back at the Cass County Fair again tonight! You’ll find us providing EMS coverage for the parade and on standby at the midway throughout the evening. If you see us out and about, don’t be shy stop by, give us a wave 👋, or come say hi! We always enjoy visiting with members of our community.

Yesterday, our Elmwood Rescue Cadets continued building the foundation of their EMS knowledge with hands-on training focused on obtaining accurate blood pressures and using a glucometer.

Our cadets learned not only how to perform these skills, but also when they’re appropriate and why they’re so important in helping EMS providers assess a patient’s condition. Understanding vital signs and blood glucose levels can provide valuable clues that help guide patient care and treatment decisions.

We’re proud of the dedication our cadets continue to show as they invest their time learning the skills needed to serve our community. Every training brings them one step closer to becoming confident, capable EMS providers.

It has come to our attention that Jimothy the Raccoon has been conducting an unofficial inspection of Elmwood Rescue.

He was first spotted sneaking into our member photo, attempting to blend in as our newest probationary volunteer.

He was later observed performing a thorough inspection of both ambulances. While he appeared impressed with the equipment, he was reportedly disappointed that neither unit contained snacks.

At this time, Jimothy has not completed:

* EMT class
* CPR certification
* Driver training

For those asking… No, Jimothy is not cleared to respond to calls. Administration has denied his request for a radio, bunker gear, and access to the station refrigerator.

If you happen to see Jimothy around town, please remind him that ride-along applications must be completed before climbing into the ambulance.

Yesterday, Elmwood Rescue responded with two ALS ambulances, staffed by seven dedicated volunteers, to assist Weeping Water Rescue on a motor vehicle accident with the potential for six patients.

Calls like these are a reminder of what volunteer EMS is all about. At a moment’s notice, our members left work, paused family time, and stepped away from their daily routines to answer the call for a neighboring community in need. Their willingness to drop everything to help others is what makes volunteer EMS so special.

Incidents like this also highlight the importance of mutual aid in rural Nebraska. By working together, neighboring departments can bring the personnel, ambulances, and advanced life support resources needed to provide the highest level of care during larger emergencies.

We’re incredibly proud of our seven volunteers who answered the call and grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Weeping Water Rescue and the other responding agencies. Thank you to everyone who played a role in caring for the patients and keeping the scene safe.

Neighbors helping neighbors that’s what volunteer EMS is all about.

Today, we welcomed students in 3rd through 5th grade to the Elmwood Fire Station as part of their learning on communities and local government.

The students are learning about the goods and services that help a community function, and we were excited to show them the important role EMS plays in keeping our community healthy and safe. They toured the ambulance, learned about some of the equipment we use, and asked some fantastic questions!

At the end of their program, the students will build their own “cities,” deciding which services they believe are essential for a successful community. We hope today’s visit gave them a better understanding of why emergency medical services are such an important part of every community.

Thank you for spending part of your day with us! We always enjoy opening our doors and sharing what we do and who knows, maybe we met a few future EMTs, paramedics, or firefighters today!
