I would be remiss if, as the Police Chief, I didn’t take this opportunity to speak about the murder of George Floyd. The video of George Floyd’s arrest and death elicited many emotions as I watched it. I found myself very angry and in disbelief that men who are responsible for enforcing the law stooped to this level of criminal behavior. I thought, how these officers can show such a flippant disregard for another man’s life regardless of the crimes he may have committed. Three of the officers showed no mercy for a man who literally died right in front of them at the hands of one of their own and they did nothing. Quite frankly, I was, and I continue to be, dismayed by what I saw in that video. I read about a news story that a Chief in St. Paul was quoted saying, “if any of his officers thought the video of George Floyd’s arrest showed reasonable force, they should resign.” I cannot agree more.
I and the Command staff of the Eloy Police Department will not tolerate abuse by our police officers. Three years ago when I became your Police Chief I conveyed to the members of this department that at all times we, when needed be firm, but will treat all people with dignity and respect. We set clear policy guidelines that basically says, no force will be used to the head, neck/throat (to include choke holds), sternum, or spinal column and no greater force than that is needed to gain compliance. Your police department has checks and balances in place to document all use of force and is reviewed to ensure the force is within policy guidelines. Our officers are also required to activate their body worn cameras to document the use of force not only for their protection, but the citizen’s protection. We carefully and thoroughly screen candidates for police officer. Once hired they receive extensive training before deploying by themselves. We train annually in the use of force and reinforce what is and is not acceptable.
I expect our officers to be professional, respectful and courteous at all times, and anything less is unacceptable. I hold myself to a high standard of conduct and expect that same behavior from each officer. I am proud of the service that the officers of the Eloy Police Department provide to its citizens, and the trust and confidence the community has placed in its police force is honored and coveted.
We will always strive to live up to our motto: “Protect with Honor - Serve with Pride.”
