It’s the season, and it’s been unseasonably dry. Be smart tomorrow and please be safe!

As if this “winter” season couldn’t get drier, Tuesday will be a critical to extreme fire weather risk day. A Red Flag Warning has been issued for noon through 8 pm CST Tuesday across all of western and north central Nebraska. A combination of strong, gusty winds, very low relative humidity percentages, and near record breaking high temperatures will bring the region into a critical to extreme fire danger. A very rare Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) Red Flag Warning has been issued for west of HWY 83 and highlighted in the dashed lines where there will be the highest risk for fires spreading rapidly and being extremely difficult to control. Please be safe and smart tomorrow to help prevent any fires igniting!

"I'll show you a Volunteer"

Show me a person who spends endless hours in the service of others, without compensation or expectation of pay... and I'll show you a volunteer.

Show me a person when hearing a cry for help responds immediately with a willingness to act... who is deeply affected when lives are hurt or lost... and I'll show you a volunteer.

Show me a person who is graciously welcomed as a neighbor... and then sometimes hears more criticism than compliments... and I'll show you a volunteer.

Show me a person whose car is garaged facing outwards... a person who sacrifices work, home life, TV time... and even life’s tender moments... and I'll show you a volunteer.

Show me a citizen, a patriot, a person who honors their flag and visibly moved at their National Anthem... someone who may be asked to give more than just dedication... and I'll show you a volunteer.

Show me a person who is asked by their community and willing to give more...and then more...and then even some more after that... and I'll show you a volunteer.

* This post dedicated to my brother and sister firefighters around the globe who make up the vast majority of the fire service… (3 out of 4 firefighters are volunteers).

To those who serve, have served… go mostly unrecognized… and have committed themselves to protecting the life and property of others; participating in the consistent training and maintenance activities necessary to achieve that end.

Tip of the helmet to you all.

May God bless and PROTECT you!

Please STAY SAFE !!!

The last few days have been a blur for the Elsie firemen. A grass fire was called out on Friday at 5:15pm. Winds were clocked at 80+ and they weren’t slowing down. With the conditions as they were we knew that help was needed. Calls started to go out to the other local fire departments. But we never knew what was going to come for help. As people started to roll into the firehall we knew we had a bad situation going on. Mutual Aid from Madrid, Grant, Wallace, Keystone/Leymone, Ogallala, Paxton, Imperial, Lamar, Wauneta, Palisade, Hayes Center, Wellfleet/Maywood, Hershey, Sutherland, Maxwell, Venango, Nebraska Forest Service Wire Rat Team, Nebraska Fire Marshalls, Perkins County Sheriff Office, Nebraska State Patrol and Perkins County Emergency Manager Jim Brueggeman answered the call. Words cannot express the thanks you to all of the local farmers that had nurse tanks, tractor and disc, and all of the semis full of water. Thank you so much for all of the communities that came together to bring water and food to the firemen. Thanks goes out to all of the neighbors that help evacuate people from their houses. The businesses that gave ice and water to help. We will never be able to say thank you enough to you. The help and support were truly appreciated. All of you dropped everything to help out with the Perkins/Hayes County Complex Fire. This is just a short way to say what this meant to all of us Elsie Volunteer Fire Department.
