Gosper County Nebraska

Gosper County Nebraska Between 1873 and 1889, three different county seats served the inhabitants of Gosper County. Robert Furnas in July 1873. Gosper was chosen as the county name.

These continuing changes were due to shifts in population that occurred during the 16-year period. As one might imagine, each relocation of the county seat did not go unchallenged. A growing interest in having an organized county government for this area culminated when a petition requesting such was filed with Gov. A month later a proclamation was issued for the county's organization and the name

of Nebraska Secretary of State John J. Daviesville, the site of the area's first post office, was named the county seat. It would not be until March 2, 1881, however, that the county's organization was legalized and its boundaries officially established by the Legislature. In November 1873, county commissioners, who had been elected less than four months earlier, authorized the construction of a courthouse in Daviesville. They did not, however, appropriate the necessary funding and as a result a courthouse was never built. For a number of years, officials kept county records and books in their homes. During those years a new settlement known as Homerville was developed with the anticipation that the railroad would pass through it. Rapid growth of the settlement led to an election in August 1882, and Homerville became the county seat over two rivals. But the railroad never came to Homerville. When the Burlington Railroad advanced westward toward Colorado, a townsite known as Elwood was platted in 1885. It was just three years later that a bitterly contested election ended with Elwood becoming the county seat. Homerville's businessmen and inhabitants followed the courthouse to Elwood, which today serves as the county seat. Fifty years after the local government offices were relocated to Elwood, voters approved a $42,000 bond issue to match a Public Works Administration grant to build the current courthouse.

Warmer weather means more motorcycles and scooters on Nebraska roads.

Because bikes have a much smaller profile than cars, they’re easier to miss in traffic. Before turning, changing lanes, or pulling out from a stop, look twice.

A second look can prevent a lifetime of regret.

Gosper County Offices Encourage Residents to Plan Ahead Following USPS Postmark Clarification
Gosper NE – January 9, 2026 – The county offices of Gosper County are alerting residents and businesses that they should plan ahead when submitting time-sensitive mail following a recent clarification by the United States Postal Service (USPS) regarding postmarking practices.
Under the updated guidance, USPS cannot guarantee that the date it takes possession of a mail piece will be the date reflected in the postmark. Residents are encouraged to take extra precautions when mailing documents that rely on a postmark to meet statutory or regulatory deadlines. This includes: Tax payments, MV renewals, Court filings, Deed filings and Assessor filings.
Additionally, recent USPS transportation changes may affect how mail moves from local post offices to processing centers. This could further delay when the mail is postmarked.
To help avoid late filings or delinquent payments, county officials recommend that residents and businesses take the following steps when submitting time-sensitive mail:
• Use electronic or online services whenever available to ensure timely submission.
• Mail items early, allowing additional time ahead of deadlines.
• Request a manual (local) postmark at the post office when mailing time-sensitive documents. This service is free and ensures the postmark reflects the date USPS takes possession of the mail piece.
• Consider optional mailing services such as Certified Mail, Registered Mail, or a Certificate of Mailing for added documentation and assurance.
Residents with questions about filing deadlines, payment options, or available electronic services are encouraged to contact the county office you are sending business to.
