Friday, August 28 @ 10:30 am – 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Graduation and Storytime – for preschoolers and families
This Friday morning, our storytime will honor the children who have finished their 1,000 book goal within the past year. Expect lots of fun games, some snacks, and a little award ceremony as well as some fun stories. Anyone (and other family members) in the 1,000 book program is welcome to attend whether or not they have made it to 1,000 books. And, if you haven’t heard about our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program, this is a great way to find out more about it. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

Thursday, August 27 @ 11 am – Wolf Ecology 101 with the International Wolf Center – for all ages
Using the gray wolf as an example, staff from the International Wolf Center will introduce you to basic concepts in ecology and the various interactions that these apex predators have with other animals. Gray wolves are just one animal in their ecosystem, but they can have a large impact on other creatures around them! This program is in cooperation with the International Wolf Center.

Wednesday, August 26 @ 11 am – Get Crafty for Kids : Tie Dye – for all ages (Adult Supervision/Help Required)
Get ready to craft with Tricia and make a tie-dye pillowcase. The library will supply everything you need to tie-dye your pillowcase. We will need to have this program outside, so it is weather dependent. Please register in advance so that we have enough supplies for everyone. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

City of Ely to Hold Tribute honoring Wildland Firefighter Leslie R. Washington

The City of Ely invites the community to gather in remembrance of Leslie R. Washington of Noorvik, Alaska, a wildland firefighter and member of K-River Crew No. 2 with Scorched Earth Services (S.E.S. Fire).

Washington was deployed to Minnesota and assigned to the Bear Trap Fire, part of the July Lightning Fires near Ely. He passed away following a medical emergency while assigned to the incident on August 11.

A community tribute will be held:
Tuesday, August 18, 2026
7:00 p.m.
Whiteside Park, Ely, Minnesota

The gathering will provide an opportunity for the Ely community to honor Leslie’s life, his service, and the sacrifice made by wildland firefighters who travel far from home to protect communities in need.

The City of Ely extends its deepest condolences to Leslie’s family, friends, fellow firefighters, K-River Crew No. 2, Scorched Earth Services, and the community of Noorvik, Alaska.

The public is invited to attend.

Knit-along (or crochet) while we listen to and discuss a true crime podcast. If you have a project you would like to share or work on, bring it along and you can work on it in the company of others! This is a welcoming environment where you can ask questions and share tips. Registration not required. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

Learn how to tie different types of bows, such as hair bows, neck bows, and decorative ribbons. Please pre-register so we know how many to set up for. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

Bring in those puzzles (please be sure that they have all of the pieces) that you’ve grown tired of playing and swap them for some new-to-you ones instead. Please plan to take home puzzles if you bring some in!
